ICC Women’s World Cup 2022 Match 26: White Ferns end the tournament on a high
The hosts ended the tournament with a comfortable win over Pakistan played at Hagley Oval, Christchurch on Saturday.
Pakistan captain Bismah Maroof won the toss and decided to
field first. It was an aggressive start for the hosts as Sophie Devine and
Suzie Bates put pressure on the Pakistani bowling. Suzie Bates was given
out by the umpire but on review, it was overturned too not out. Anam Amin got
the breakthrough dismissing White Ferns captain Devine. Devine and Bates added
31 runs in quick time.
Amelia Kerr joined in with Bates and kept the pressure on
the Pakistani bowling line-up. At the end of the first 10 overs, New Zealand women
scored 56 for 1. After the field restrictions, Bates and Kerr maintained the
momentum making life tough. Nida Dar dismissed Amelia Kerr caught by Sidra
Ameen. Bates and Kerr added 68 runs for the 2nd wicket. Dar got rid
of Amy Satterwhite soon without opening her account to put pressure back on
hosts.
Suzie Bates looked composed and reached her fifty off 54
balls. After completing her fifty, Bates showed her class while Maddy Green
gave good support to her. Nida Dar dismissed Maddy Green with a good delivery
to end 60 runs partnership for the 4th wicket. Suzie Bates kept the
pressure on the Pakistan bowling line-up and completed her century off 110
balls. After reaching the milestone, Bates scored runs quickly along with Halliday.
Bates was eventually dismissed by Nashra Sandhu. Halliday and Bates added 51
runs for the 5th wicket.
Pakistan bowlers kept on taking wickets and reduced hosts to
231 for 8. Katey Martin produced a quickfire cameo while MacKay provided good
support helping New Zealand post 265 for 8. Martin and MacKay added unbeaten 34
runs for the 9th wicket.
Muneeba Ali showed positive intent against the White Ferns
bowlers while Sidra Ameen struggled to time the ball. MacKay got the
breakthrough dismissing Sidra Ameen with a simple catch by Halliday at backward
point. Muneeba and Sidra Ameen added 39 runs for the opening wicket. At the end
of the first 10 overs, Pakistan women posted 42 with the loss of Sidra Ameen.
A lovely catch by Sophie Devine ended the innings for Muneeba
to leave Pakistan struggling. Omaima Sohail and Pakistan captain Bismah failed
to rotate the strike against disciplined White Ferns bowling. A good low catch
by Satterwhite ended innings for Sohail.
Nida Dar came to the crease and struggled to rotate the
strike with Bismah. Dar then displayed attacking strokes making life tough for
the hosts. Bismah also looked in decent touch keeping the scoreboard ticking. Hannah
Rowe got rid of Pakistan captain Bismah with a review. The umpire gave not out
but on review, it was overturned to out with strangling down the leg. Dar and Bismah
added 82 runs for the 4th wicket.
Hannah Rowe broke the backbone of the Pakistan line-up getting
rid of Aliya Riaz. Dar completed her fifty off 52 balls and was dismissed by
Rowe to leave Pakistan in big trouble. Rowe got 2 more wickets of Sidra Nawaz
with a beauty and then Diana Baig to take her fifth wicket. Nashra Sandhu was
given out by the umpire but on review, it was overturned due to the ball missing leg
stump. Sandhu and Anam kept White Ferns out to bat fifty overs out.
New Zealand women 265 for 8 in 50 overs (Suzie Bates 126, Martin
30*, Nida Dar 3/39) beat Pakistan women 194 for 9 in 50 overs ( Nida Dar 50, Bismah
38, Hannah Rowe 5/55) by 71 runs.
With this win, New Zealand ended the tournament with 6 points.
They would need a miracle to go through to the semi-finals hoping that South
Africa thrash India by a huge margin and then Bangladesh produced a dominating
performance against England.
For her 126 off 135 balls, Suzie Bates was named the player
of the match. She decided to share the trophy with Hannah Rowe.
