IPL 2022 Match 1: Kolkata Knight Riders starts the tournament with a comfortable win

 Kolkata Knight Riders began the 15th season of Indian Premier League 2022 with a comfortable win over defending champions Chennai Super Kings played at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on Saturday.  

Kolkata Knight Riders captain Shreyas Iyer won the toss and decided to field first. Umesh Yadav delivered a no-ball before producing a stunning delivery dismissing Ruturaj Gaikwad without opening his account. Robin Uthappa looked in great touch putting the pressure on KKR bowlers with positive intent. Umesh dismissed Devon Conway providing a simple catch to Shreyas Iyer to leave CSK in trouble. Uthappa survived a close shot as it hit the stumps but did not dislodge the wickets. At the end of the first six overs, CSK scored 35 for 2.

Varun Chakravarthy got rid of well-set Robin Uthappa stumped by Sheldon Jackson. Ambati Rayudu looked good a good throw by Shreyas Iyer and by Sunil Narine to leave Chennai Super Kings in trouble at 52 for 4. With that, the first timeout was called at 52 for 4. Andre Russell got rid of Shivam Dube to leave CSK in big trouble at 61 for 5.

MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja struggled against the disciplined KKR bowling. At the end of the second timeout, CSK made just 69 for 5. After the timeout, Dhoni showed intent and kept the pressure on Kolkata Knight Riders bowlers in the last 3 overs. On the other hand, Ravindra Jadeja was not able to hit runs freely. The former CSK captain Dhoni completed fifty off 38 balls while Jadeja hit a six off the final ball. Dhoni and Jadeja added unbeaten 70 runs for the 6th wicket. Thanks to a brilliant knock by Dhoni, Chennai Super Kings posted 131 for 5 in 20 overs. For KKR, Umesh Yadav was the pick of the bowlers with 2 for 20, Varun Chakravarthy 1 for 23.

Chasing 132 runs to win, Ajiyanka Rahane and Venetaksh Iyer provided a steady start against disciplined CSK bowling. After the initial struggle, Rahane put pressure on Adam Milne to keep the KKR chase on target. KKR openers ensured that they ended the first six overs at 43 for 0. Soon after the field restrictions, Dwyane Bravo dismissed Iyer with a lovely catch by Dhoni. KKR openers added 43 runs for the opening wicket. Nitish Rana looked in sublime touch putting pressure on the CSK bowlers along with Rahane. At the end of the first timeout, KKR made 70 for 1.

After the timeout, Bravo got rid of Rana caught by Rayudu. Rana and Rahane added 33 runs for the 2nd wicket. After a superb knock by Rahane, he was dismissed by Santer to leave KKR on backfoot. Shreyas Iyer and Sam Billings kept the momentum going for KKR keeping the scoreboard ticking. Bravo dismissed Billings caught by Tushar Deshpande. Iyer and Billings added 36 runs for the 4th wicket. Sheldon Jackson and Iyer help KKR register a comfortable win.

Kolkata Knight Riders 133 for 4 in 18.3 overs ( Ajiyanka Rahane 44, Billings 25, Bravo 3/20) beat Chennai Super Kings 131 for 5 in 20 overs ( MS Dhoni 50*, Uthappa 28, Umesh Yadav 2/20) by 6 wickets.

For his figures of 2 for 20 in 4 overs, Umesh Yadav was named the man of the match.
