IPL 2022 Match 6: RCB beat KKR in thriller
Royal Challengers Bangalore opened their account in the tournament with a thrilling win over Kolkata Knight Riders played at DY Patil Stadium, Mumbai on Wednesday.
RCB captain Faf du Plessis won the toss and decided to field
first. Mohammed Siraj and Akashdeep put pressure on the KKR opening batsmen of Venetaksh
Iyer and Rahane. Akash deep struck for RCB dismissing Venetaksh Iyer with a
simple return catch. Shreyas Iyer started the innings with a lovely boundary.
Mohammed Siraj dismissed Ajiyanka Rahane providing an easy catch to Shahbaz Ahmed
at deep square leg.
Nitish Rana showed intent right from the word go and kept the pressure on the RCB bowlers. A superb diving catch by David Willey got rid of
Nitish Rana to leave KKR in trouble. At the end of the first six overs, KKR
scored 44 for 3.
After the field restrictions, Hasaranga dismissed KKR
captain Shreyas Iyer caught by Du Plessis. It was a disciplined bowling effort
by RCB bowlers. Akash deep struck again getting the wicket of Sunil Narine who
looked in brilliant form. At the end of the first timeout, KKR scored 67 for 5.
Hasaranga produced a beauty to dismiss Sheldon Jackson's very
next ball to leave KKR in deep trouble at 67 for 6. Andre Russell showed intent
right from the word go and hit boundaries at will making life tough for RCB. Harshal
Patel got wickets of Sam Billings and then dangerous Andre Russell to keep
pressure on KKR.
Hasaranga dismissed Tim Southee to pick his fourth wicket
and kept KKR under check. Umesh Yadav and Varun Chakravarthy provided some stability
scoring important runs. Akash deep castled Yadav’s stump to bowl out KKR for 128
in 18.5 overs.
Chasing 129 runs to win, it was not an ideal start for RCB
losing Anuj Rawat in the very first over itself. Umesh Yadav struck twice in
quick succession getting wickets of du Plessis and Kohli to leave RCB in
trouble at 17 for 3. Sherfane Rutherford and David Willey steadied the ship
keeping the scoreboard ticking with boundaries and taking singles. At the end
of the first six overs, RCB scored 36 for 3.
After the field restrictions, Willey and Rutherford showed
intent before Narine dismissed Willey caught by Rana. Willey and Rutherford
added 45 runs for the 4th wicket. Shahbaz Ahmed kept the pressure on
KKR bowlers with lovely shots making life tough. At the end of the second timeout,
RCB made 93 for 4.
Varun Chakravarthy grabbed Shahbaz Ahmed stumped off his
last ball in the spell. Shahbaz and Rutherford added 39 runs for the 5th
wicket. A stunning catch by Jackson ended
the innings for Rutherford to leave the match in the balance.
Harshal Patel smashed important boundaries in the 19th
over to help RCB on course for a win. Dinesh Karthik did the job hitting a six
and boundary.
RCB 132 for 7 in 19.2 overs (Sherfane Rutherford 28, Shahbaz
Ahmed 27, Southee 3/20, Umesh Yadav 2/16) beat KKR 128 in 18.5 overs (Andre
Russell 25, Umesh Yadav 18, Hasaranga 4/20, Akash deep 3/45) by 3 wickets.
For his figures of 4 for 20 in 4 overs, Hasaranga was named
the man of the match award. With this win, RCB opened its account in IPL
2022.
