England versus NZ 3rd Test 4th Day: Joe Root and Ollie Pope puts England on course for a clean sweep
The England Cricket Team continued their chasing abilities as Joe Root and Ollie Pope ensured that they end day 4 in a strong position played at Headingly, Leeds on Sunday.
Starting on the overnight score of 168 for 5, Daryl Mitchell
and Tom Blundell began the 4th day on a positive note keeping
scoreboard ticking not allowing England bowlers to settle. Sam Billings kept
the wickets for England due to Foakes being contracted with COVID. Mitchell
survived a close LBW shout given out but on review, it was overturned to not out
as it was going over the stumps.
England captain Stokes took the 2nd new ball
after the 80th over. Mitchell and Blundell ensured that New Zealand
end the first session at 254 for 5. Mitchell continued his merry way completing his
fifty off 145 balls. Matthew Potts stunned Mitchell with a lovely delivery to
dismiss Mitchell. Mitchell and Blundell added 113 runs for the 6th
wicket. Jack Leach looked impressive with his bowling-grabbing wickets at
regular intervals. On other hand, Tom Blundell showed his class completing
fifty off 105 balls.
Blundell survived another decision as the umpire gave it out but
on review, it was overturned to not out. Leach grabbed his first 10-wicket haul
in Test matches by dismissing Boult. Blundell remained not out on 88. New
Zealand made 326 runs setting England's target of 296 runs. With that wicket, the
umpires called it tea.
The third session did not start well for the hosts as they
lost an early wicket of Lees with a run-out due to a mix-up. Zak Crawley looked
in great touch showing intent to keep the scoreboard ticking. Bracewell
produced the magic dismissing Crawley caught by Williamson. Crawley and Pope
added 34 runs for the 2nd wicket. Joe Root and Ollie Pope looked in
brilliant touch not allowing Bracewell to settle.
Root was simply amazing hitting Wagner for a six with a
reverse sweep over the slips. Pope and Root maintained a quick scoring rate.
Pope completed fifty off 66 balls while Root reached half-century off 78 balls.
Root and Pope looked at ease ending the 4th day at 183 for 2.
