FIH Pro Hockey League 2021/22 Leg 2: Indian men’s team finish third
The Indian men’s hockey ended the FIH Pro Hockey League journey with a narrow loss to the Netherlands in the 2nd leg played at Rotterdam on Sunday.
It was an ideal start for the Indian team as Abhishek broke
through the Dutch defense and put into a goal in the 1st minute
itself. The Netherlands came back strongly with a brilliant drag-flick goal by
Jansen in the 7th minute to level the match. The Netherlands put enough
pressure on the Indian defense. P Sreejesh was simply sensational producing
brilliant saves. It was an amazing game by both teams as the first quarter
ended at 1-1.
The second quarter saw P Sreejesh did not take part as a
goalkeeper. India was awarded a penalty stroke as Harmanpreet Singh’s shot was
weak enough the Netherlands goalkeeper saved the shot. The Netherlands showed great attacking
skills as the Indian defense conceded lots of penalty corners. Pawan made some brilliant
saves to deny the Netherlands the lead. The Indian team had 4 shots on goal due to PCS
but did not yield any results. At the end of the first half, the scores remained
1-1.
P Sreejesh returned for India as a goalkeeper. It was a dull
period of play for both teams to maintain the possession. In the dying moments
of the third quarter, Croon deflects the shot into a goal in the 45th
minute to give the Netherlands a 2-1 lead.
The fourth quarter began well for the Indian team with a penalty
corner. Netherlands goalkeeper Visser make a stunning save to deny Manpreet. The Netherlands
kept the pressure on the Indian defense but could not yield any results. Both
teams had chances of goals with penalty corners but could not do it. At the end
of the fourth quarter, the match ended with the Netherlands winning the match by 2-1.
India finished the FIH Pro Hockey 2021/22 season in third
place. They played some brilliant hockey giving top nations like Belgium,
Argentina, and the Netherlands tough times. Netherlands became the 2021/22 FIH Pro
Hockey Champion.
