Indian men’s hockey team announced for Commonwealth Games 2022
The Indian men’s hockey team for the prestigious 2022 Commonwealth Games has been announced to be played from 29th July till 8th August.
Manpreet Singh has been handed the charge for prestigious event.
Hockey India thought about sending a second-string side for CWG due to the short gap
between CWG and Asian Games. However, with the Asian Games postponed to next
year due to the COVID situation in China, HI decided to send a strong unit for the prestigious
event.
In the 2018 edition, India finished fourth losing to England
by 0-6 in the bronze medal match. This time around they have been clubbed in Group
B with England, Canada, Wales, and Ghana. They will begin their tournament on
31st July against Ghana.
Under the captaincy of Manpreet Singh, the Indian team won a historic
bronze medal in Tokyo Olympics after a gap of 41 years. They recently featured in
the FIH Pro Hockey League tournament where they finished 3rd losing
both their matches to the Netherlands.
The team will be led by Manpreet Singh. P Sreejesh and
Krishna Bahadur Pathak were two goalkeepers included in the squad.
This Indian team has been in good form giving tough fight to
top teams like Belgium and the Netherlands. Forwards include Mandeep Singh, Gurjant
Singh, Lalit Kumar Upadhyay, and Abhishek.
Varun Kumar, Surender Kumar, Harmanpreet Singh, Amit
Rohidas, Jugraj Singh and Jarmanpreet Singh consist of defenders. Manpreet
Singh, Hardik Singh, Vivek Sagar Prasad, Shamsher Singh, Akashdeep Singh, and Nilkanta
Sharma are the midfielders.
The Indian team has top-quality drag-flickerrs takers like Varun
Kumar, Harmanpreet Singh, and Jarmanpreet Singh who can change the course of the
match. Harmanpreet Singh performed brilliantly with 18 goals in the recently
concluded FIH Pro Hockey League season.
Group A consists of Pakistan, New Zealand, South Africa, Australia,
and Scotland. The top two teams in both pools will qualify for the semi-finals.
