Ranji Trophy 2021/22 Finals Day 5: MP register their first ever Ranji Trophy title
Madhya Pradesh became the new Champions of Ranji Trophy 2021/22 as they defeated Mumbai on the fifth and final day played at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru on Sunday.
Starting on the overnight score of 113 for 2, Suved Parkar
and Arman Jaffer showed intent right from the word go putting pressure on the
Madhya Pradesh bowlers. Both Mumbai batsmen kept the charge with lovely shots
trying to give momentum. Gaurav Yadav eventually got a breakthrough dismissing
Armaan Jaffer bowling around the legs. Jaffer and Parkar added 56 runs for the
3rd wicket.
Madhya Pradesh bowlers was warned for delivering negative
lines. Parkar and Sarfaraz Khan took the charge with attacking strokes keeping
the scoreboard ticking. Parkar completed fifty off 56 balls showing his class.
Kartikeya struck with a straight delivery getting rid of Parkar. Parkar and
Sarfaraz Khan added 53 runs for the 4th wicket. Jaiswal came to bat
at number 6 fell cheaply caught by Patidar to leave Mumbai in trouble.
Sarfaraz Khan and Mulani looked in decent touch showing
intent keeping Mumbai hopes alive. Mulani was run-out while trying to take a
single. Mulani and Sarfaraz Khan added 34 runs for the 6th wicket.
Soon after, Sarfaraz Khan was caught at deep backward square leg to put MP on
verge of a famous win. A superb catch down the leg ended in the wicket of
Kotian. Tushar Desphande also went in way of a run-out thanks to a mix-up with
Mohit Avashti. Dhawal Kulkarni came to bat at number 10. Despite all the
efforts, Mohit was dismissed by Sahani to be bowled out for 269 setting MP target
of 108 runs. With that wicket, the umpires called lunch.
Chasing 108 runs to win, it was not an ideal start for MP as
Yash Dubey did not last long dismissed by Dhawal. Himanshu Mantri and Shubham
Sharma kept the scoreboard ticking showing intent to keep MP on course for a
win. Mulani got rid of Mantri with a lovely delivery. Mantri and Shubham added
52 runs for the 2nd wicket. Parth Sahani was promoted to number 4
but did not contribute much.
Rajat Patidar and Sharma kept the scoreboard ticking with
ease. Patidar continued from where he left in the first innings. Mulani got rid
of Shubham Sharma providing an easy catch to Jaffer. Patidar and Sharma added 35
runs for the 4th wicket. Patidar hit the winning runs for MP helping
them to register their first-ever Ranji Trophy title.
Madhya Pradesh 536 in
177.2 overs (Dubey 133, Shubham Sharma 116, Patidar 122, Mulani 5/173,
Desphande 3/116) and 108 for 4 in 29.5 overs ( Mantri 37, Patidar 30*, Mulani
3/41) beat Mumbai 374 in 127.4 overs (Sarfaraz Khan 134,
Jaiswal 78, Gaurav Yadav 4/ 106, Anubhav Agarwal 3/81) and 269 in 57.3 overs ( Suved
Parkar 51, Sarfaraz Khan 45, Kumar Kartikeya 4/98, Sahani 2/43) by 6 wickets.
For his 116 and 30, Shubham Sharma
was named the man of the match award. Sarfaraz Khan was awarded the man of the
series for his 982 runs.
