Asia Cup 2022 Match 3: Najibullah and Ibrahim Zadran brilliance lead Afghanistan to a famous win
Afghanistan became the first team to qualify for the Super 4 stage as they defeated Bangladesh in an impressive performance in the 3rd match of Asia Cup 2022 played at Sharjah Cricket Ground, Sharjah on Tuesday.
Bangladesh captain Shakib AL Hasan won the toss and decided
to bat first. Mujeeb Ur Rahman created a significant impact by dismissing Mohammad Naim in
his 1st over. He then dismissed Anamul Haque via review. The umpire
called not out before Afghanistan reviewed the decision and it was overturned
to out. It was another superb piece of delivery to dismiss Shakib AL Hasan to
leave Bangladesh in big trouble. At the end of the first six overs, Bangladesh made
28 for 3.
Soon after the field restrictions, Rashid Khan did the
damage by dismissing Mushfiqur Rahim via review. The umpire called it not out
but on review, it was overturned to out to leave Bangladesh in deep trouble at
28 for 4. Afghanistan bowlers kept a tight lid on the Bangladesh batters and made
life tough. Rashid Khan struck again to dismiss Afif Hossain leaving them under
immense pressure. Mossadek Hossain looked in decent touch along with the
experienced Mahmudullah. Rashid Khan struck again to get rid of Mahmudullah
with an easy catch to Ibrahim Zadran. Mahmudullah and Mossadek added 36 runs
for the 6th wicket.
Mossadek and Mahedi Hasan kept some momentum going for
Bangladesh with lovely shots. Mahedi Hasan was run out as Mossadek wanted to
keep the strike. Both batters added 38 runs for the 7th wicket.
Asmatullah Omarzai bowled the final over and gave away just 7 runs in 20th
over. Bangladesh posted 127 for 7 in 20 overs.
Chasing a modest total of 128 runs to win, it was a cautious
start by Hazratullah Zazai and Rahmanullah Gurbaz against disciplined Bangladesh
bowling. Shakib AL Hasan produced the magic by getting rid of Gurbaz with a lovely
stumping by Rahim. Zazai and Ibrahim Zadran struggled as they ended the first
six overs at 29 for 1.
Mossadek Hossain struck to dismiss left-handed Zazai. Zazai
and Ibhraim Zadran added 30 runs for the 2nd wicket. Bangladesh bowlers
kept the pressure on Afghanistan batters not allowing them to score runs freely.
Mohammad Saifuddin dismissed Afghanistan captain Mohammad Nabi with the required
run rate climbing.
Ibrahim Zadran released the pressure with back-to-back
boundaries. Najibullah Zadran decimated Bangladesh with big shots. Ibrahim and
Najibullah Zadran looked in great touch hitting boundaries at will. The left-handed
Zadran showed his class by hitting sixes with ease. Najibullah Zadran hit the
winning shot smashing a straight six to help Afghanistan chase down the target
easily. Najibullah scored 43 off 17 balls with 1 four and 6 sixes at a strike
rate of 252.94 on a slow pitch.
Najibullah and Ibrahim Zadran put on unbeaten 69 runs for
the 4th wicket. Afghanistan won the match by 7 wickets with 9 balls
to spare.
Afghanistan 131 for 3 in 18.3 overs (Najibullah Zadran 43*, Ibrahim
Zadran 42*, Shakib AL Hasan 1/13) beat Bangladesh 127 for 7 in 20 overs (Mossadek
Hossain 48*, Mujeeb Ur Rahman 3/16, Rashid Khan 3/22) by 7 wickets.
For his 3 for 16 in 4 overs, Mujeeb Ur Rahman was named the
man of the match award. The winner of Bangladesh and Sri Lanka on 1st
September will qualify for the Super 4 stage.
