CWG 2022 Cricket: Indian women’s thrash Barbados to qualify for the semi-finals
The Indian women’s cricket showed their skills to crush Barbados in a must-win contest played at Edgbaston, Birmingham on Wednesday.
Barbados captain Hayley Mathews won the toss and decided to field
first. It was an ideal start as Bruce got rid of Smriti Mandhana via review for
LBW. The umpire gave not out but on review, it was overturned to out as it was
hitting the stumps. Jemimah Rodrigues showed intent right from word go.
Shafali Verma took the charge putting pressure on Barbados
bowlers, especially Connell and Bruce. Verma kept the momentum going for the Indian team
and did not allow Barbados bowlers to settle. At the end of the first six overs,
India ended at 50 for 1.
It was a disastrous end for Shafali Verma as she was run out
in a horrible mix-up. Shafali Verma and Rodrigues added 71 runs for the 2nd
wicket. Shakera Selman dismissed Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur with a lovely
delivery to trap her in front of the stumps to leave Women in Blue struggling.
Taniya Bhatia came into the playing XI replacing Yastika
Bhatia but did not look comfortable against disciplined Barbados bowling. Mathews got
rid of Bhatia as Dottin made a simple catch look tough to put the Indian team under
pressure.
Jemimah Rodrigues showed intent after smashing Mathews for a
boundary to keep the Indian innings going. Deepti Sharma also took the charge
and made batting look easy against wayward Barbados bowling. With Barbados going
behind the over rate, they were penalized with an extra fielder inside the circle.
Rodrigues completed her fifty off 44 balls and kept the
Indian innings momentum going on with Deepti Sharma. Rodrigues ended the
innings with a boundary to help the Indian team post a competitive total of 162 for
4. Rodrigues and Deepti Sharma added unbeaten 70 runs for the 5th
wicket.
The wrecker in chief Renuka Thakur displayed a superb skill
of bowling as she rattled Deandra Dottin with a lovely delivery shattering the stumps.
Singh then grabbed the wicket of Hayley Mathews providing a simple catch to Shafali
Verma at mid-on. Singh showed her skills with peach of deliveries to Kyica
Knight and then Aaliyah Alleyne to derail the Barbados innings. At the end of the first six overs, Barbados looked in deep trouble at 20 for 4.
The Indian bowlers never allowed Barbados batters to score
runs freely. It was a superb bowling performance as they restricted the
opponents for just 62 runs picking up 8 wickets after the end of 20 overs.
Indian women 162 for 4 in 20 overs (Jemimah Rodrigues 56*,
Deepti Sharma 34*, Shakera Selman 1/20) beat Barbados 62 for 8 in 20 overs ( Kyshona
Knight 16, Renuka Singh 4/10) by 100 runs.
With this win, the Indian women’s team qualified for the semi-finals
