Zimbabwe stun Bangladesh in T20I and ODI series

It was a superb performance by Zimbabwe defeating the full member nation in both T20I and ODI series at home. All 6 matches of the series were played at Harare Sports Club, Harare from 30th July till 10th August 2022.

Zimbabwe registered the first T20I series win over a full member nation.

The first T20I was a high-scoring affair as the host's Zimbabwe posted 205 for 3 in 20 overs. Zimbabwe captain Craig Ervine won the toss and decided to bat first. The hosts lost an early wicket of Regis Chakabva. Ervine looked in decent touch before being dismissed. Sean Williams and Wesley Medherve steadied the ship for Zimbabwe putting on 56 runs for the 3rd wicket. Sikander Raza blasted away Bangladesh bowling lineup along with Medherve. Medherve decided to retire hurt due to an injury. Raza completed fifty off 23 balls and put on 91 runs for the 4th wicket.

Despite a decent batting effort by Bangladesh, Zimbabwe bowlers showed their class to restrict the visitors to 188 for 6 and win the match by 17 runs.

The second T20I saw Zimbabwe suffer a 7 wickets loss on 31st August. Thanks to a superb batting effort by Sikander Raza making 62 off 53 balls, Zimbabwe could manage 135 for 8. Bangladesh chased down this modest target by 7 wickets with 15 balls to level the series at 1-1.

Zimbabwe captain Craig Ervine won the toss and decided to bat first again. After a decent opening partnership of 29 runs for the opening wicket between Chakabva and Ervine, Zimbabwe looked in deep trouble at 67 for 6 in the 13th over. Ryan Burl produced the magic by smashing 34 runs off Nasum Ahmed to put Zimbabwe back on track. Burl and Jongwe kept the pressure on Bangladesh's bowling putting on 79 runs for the 7th wicket. Burl smashed 50 off just 24 balls while Jongwe made 35 off 20 balls.

The Zimbabwe bowlers kept a tight lid picking up wickets at regular intervals. Apart from Afif Hossain's unbeaten 39, Mahmudullah's 27, and Mahedi Hasan's 22, none of the Bangladeshi batters could contribute big runs. Zimbabwe won the match by 10 runs to register a 2-1 series win.

Sikander Raza was awarded the player of the series for his all-around contributions.

It was a great batting performance by Bangladesh as Tamim Iqbal 62, Liton Das 81 retired hurt, Anamul Haque 73, Mushfiqur Rahim unbeaten 52, and Mahmudullah 20 helped the visitors post 303 for 2.

In reply, Zimbabwe lost 2 early wickets of Regis Chakabva and Muskanada cheaply. Wesley Medherve and Kaia put on 56 runs for the 3rd wicket. Kaia scored his maiden ODI century while Raza showed his class. Both scored centuries as Kaia was dismissed for 110. Luke Jongwe produced magic with quickfire 24 off 16 balls. Raza remained unbeaten on 135 off 109 balls helping Zimbabwe chase down the target with 10 deliveries to spare. With this win, Zimbabwe took a 1-0 lead in the 3-match ODI series.

The second ODI saw Zimbabwe again performing brilliantly. Regis Chakabva won the toss and decided to field first. A good batting effort by Tamim Iqbal scoring 50, Hossain Shanto 38, Mahmudullah unbeaten 80, and Afif Hossain 41 helped Bangladesh post 290 for 9. There were five changes for Zimbabwe in the squad.

Zimbabwe looked in deep trouble at 49 for 4. Sikander Raza and Regis Chakabva produced the magic putting on 201 runs for the 5th wicket. The debutant Tony Mungyonga displayed great hitting abilities as he added unbeaten 41 runs for the 6th wicket. Zimbabwe won the match by 5 wickets with 15 balls to spare.

The third ODI saw Zimbabwe suffer a huge defeat. Zimbabwe captain Chakabva won the toss and decided to field first. Thanks to Anamul Haque's 76 and an unbeaten 85 by Afif Hossain, Bangladesh could muster only 256 for 9.

In reply, Zimbabwe struggled with their batting as Sikander Raza was dismissed without opening his account. Richard Ngarava and Victor Nyuachi delayed the proceedings as Bangladesh won the match by 105 runs.

For his 252 runs and 5 wickets, Sikander Raza was awarded the man of the series award. It was a remarkable performance by Zimbabwe in both T20I and ODI series.

The ODI series was not a part of the ICC ODI Super League. Zimbabwe will now face India in the 3-match ODI journey from 18th August 2022.
