French Open 2022: Satwik and Chirag Shetty create history
The World number 8 Indian pairing of SatwikRankiReddy and Chirag Shetty created history as they won the Super 750 French Open against the Chinese Taipei pair in straight sets played in Paris on 30th October 2022.
It was an aggressive start for the Indian pairing right from
the word go putting pressure on Lu Ching and Yang Po. Satwik and Chirag showed
their class not allowing their Chinese Taipei a chance into the game. At the
mid-game interval, the Indian pair had an 11-5 lead. After the break, Satwik and
Chirag looked in complete control winning the first game easily at 21-13.
The second game saw initially both pairs fighting for each
point before Satwik and Chirag Shetty showed their domination with smashes. At
the mid-game interval, the Indian pairing had an 11-5 lead and looked good to
win the title. After the break, Satwik and Chirag made unforced errors allowing
the Chinese Taipei to make a comeback. Lu and Yang leveled the scores at 15-15
before both pairs took alternate points till 19-19.
Satwik and Chirag showed their class as they registered a historic win with a 21-19 scoreline. They became the 2nd Indian men’s
doubles pair to win French Open after a gap of 39 years. It was an impressive performance
by Satwik and Chirag playing some aggressive badminton in recent times.
Satwik and Chirag became the 1st Indian men’s
doubles pair to win a historic World Championship bronze medal in 2022. They also
won historic men’s doubles gold medal at the Commonwealth Championship played
in Birmingham.
Their performance at the French Open 2022 stood out. The
Indian pairing started their 2022 French Open tournament with 19-21, 21-9, and 21-13 in the first round. After that scratchy performance, Satwik and Chirag
showed their domination defeating WC Man and Lee of Malaysia in two straight
games by 21-16, 21-14 to move into the quarterfinals.
Their best performance came when they stunned the number 1
ranked seed Hoki and Kobayashi in two thrilling games by 23-21, 21-18 to move
into the semi-finals. Satwik and Chirag looked strong with a straight-game win over
Kim and Choi of South Korea by 21-18, 21-14 to reach the finals.
Partho Ganguly and Vikram Singh won India's first-ever men’s
doubles French Open title in 1983. Satwik and Chirag Shetty also became 1st
ever Indian doubles pairing to win the Super 750 title.
Victor Axselen continued
his impressive performance defeating Rasmus Gemke in two straight games by
21-14, 21-15.
He Bingjao rallied back from one game down to the title-winning against Carolina Marin with scoreline of 16-21, 21-9, 22-20.
Pearly Tan and Thinnah Muralitharan defeated Mayu Matsumoto
and Nagahara of Japan in three thrilling games. The Malaysian pair won the
first game by 21-19 before the Japanese pair fought back strongly to win the second
game with a scoreline of 21-18. It was one-way traffic for Tan and Muralitharan as
they won the decider by 21-15 to win the women’s doubles title.
Zheng Siwei and Huang of China defeated Robin Tabeling and
Selena Piek of the Netherlands in three thrilling games. The Chinese pair won the
first game easily by 21-16 before Robin and Selena fought back strongly to take the second game by 21-14.
The third and deciding game was a closely fought affair
before the Chinese pair held onto their nerves to win the match by 22-20 to win the mixed doubles title.
