Super 12 Group 1: England starts the tournament with an easy win
The England Cricket Team started their ICC T20 World Cup 2022 with a comfortable win over Afghanistan played at Optus Stadium, Perth on Saturday.
England captain Jos Buttler won the toss and decided to
field first. It was an ideal start for England's side as Mark Wood got an early
breakthrough dismissing Rahmanullah Gurbaz. Wood troubled Afghanistan batters
with pace and bounce on the pitch. Hazaratullah Zazai struggled against
top-quality England bowling. At the end of the first six overs, Afghanistan made 35
for 1.
Ben Stokes was introduced into the attack and got rid of
Zazai with a stunning diving catch by Liam Livingstone to put Afghanistan in trouble.
Usman Ghani and Ibrahim Zadran steadied the ship taking singles and hitting
shots on short deliveries. Sam Curran dismissed Ibrahim's deception caught by
Moeen Ali.
The England catching was sensational as Adil Rashid took a stunning
running catch to dismiss Najibullah Zadran. Buttler took another one-handed diving
catch getting rid of Mohammad Nabi leaving Afghanistan in big trouble. Sam Curran
produced a brilliant spell taking wickets in quick succession. He was simply outstanding
troubling the Afghanistan batters with pace and bounce. Curran became the first
England bowler in the men’s T20I to pick 5 wicket haul. England skittled out
Afghanistan for just 112.
Chasing down a modest total of 113 runs to win, Jos Buttler
and Alex Hales looked solid enough to put the bad deliveries away for
boundaries. Fazallaq Farooqi provided the breakthrough by dismissing Buttler
caught by Mujeeb Ur Rahman. Buttler and Hales added 35 runs for the opening wicket.
At the end of the first six overs, England made 40 for 1. The
Afghanistan bowlers kept it tight not allowing England batters to score runs
easily. Despite losing wickets, England never looked troubled. Mohammad Nabi led
from the front with a stunning catch to dismiss Malan. Stokes was dismissed by
Nabi.
Liam Livingstone and Harry Brooks kept England calm as they
won the match by 5 wickets with 11 balls to spare.
England 113 for 5 in 18.1 overs ( Livingstone 29*, Mujeeb Ur
Rahman 1/22) beat Afghanistan 112 in 19.4 overs ( Ibrahim Zadran 32, Ghani 30,
Sam Curran 5/10) by 5 wickets.
For his 5 for 10, Sam Curran was named the player of the
match award. With this win, England opened their account with a comprehensive
win.
