Super 12 Group 1: England starts the tournament with an easy win

The England Cricket Team started their ICC T20 World Cup 2022 with a comfortable win over Afghanistan played at Optus Stadium, Perth on Saturday.

England captain Jos Buttler won the toss and decided to field first. It was an ideal start for England's side as Mark Wood got an early breakthrough dismissing Rahmanullah Gurbaz. Wood troubled Afghanistan batters with pace and bounce on the pitch. Hazaratullah Zazai struggled against top-quality England bowling. At the end of the first six overs, Afghanistan made 35 for 1.

Ben Stokes was introduced into the attack and got rid of Zazai with a stunning diving catch by Liam Livingstone to put Afghanistan in trouble. Usman Ghani and Ibrahim Zadran steadied the ship taking singles and hitting shots on short deliveries. Sam Curran dismissed Ibrahim's deception caught by Moeen Ali.

The England catching was sensational as Adil Rashid took a stunning running catch to dismiss Najibullah Zadran. Buttler took another one-handed diving catch getting rid of Mohammad Nabi leaving Afghanistan in big trouble. Sam Curran produced a brilliant spell taking wickets in quick succession. He was simply outstanding troubling the Afghanistan batters with pace and bounce. Curran became the first England bowler in the men’s T20I to pick 5 wicket haul. England skittled out Afghanistan for just 112.

Chasing down a modest total of 113 runs to win, Jos Buttler and Alex Hales looked solid enough to put the bad deliveries away for boundaries. Fazallaq Farooqi provided the breakthrough by dismissing Buttler caught by Mujeeb Ur Rahman. Buttler and Hales added 35 runs for the opening wicket.

At the end of the first six overs, England made 40 for 1. The Afghanistan bowlers kept it tight not allowing England batters to score runs easily. Despite losing wickets, England never looked troubled. Mohammad Nabi led from the front with a stunning catch to dismiss Malan. Stokes was dismissed by Nabi.

Liam Livingstone and Harry Brooks kept England calm as they won the match by 5 wickets with 11 balls to spare.

England 113 for 5 in 18.1 overs ( Livingstone 29*, Mujeeb Ur Rahman 1/22) beat Afghanistan 112 in 19.4 overs ( Ibrahim Zadran 32, Ghani 30, Sam Curran 5/10) by 5 wickets.

For his 5 for 10, Sam Curran was named the player of the match award. With this win, England opened their account with a comprehensive win.
