BWF World Tour Finals 2022: HS Prannoy shocks Olympic Champion Victor Axselen

 HS Prannoy stunned the Olympic Champion Victor Axselen in the final Group A game of the BWF World Tour finals played in Bangkok on 9 December 2022.

The Indian lost the first two matches in three thrilling games against Kodai Narakoka and then Lu Gungazou of China. It was an impressive performance by Prannoy who looked impressive with his shots putting the Olympic Champion under pressure.

Prannoy had a steady start against Axselen as he stayed in touch on the scoreboard initially. Axselen looked in complete control with great smashes putting the Indian under pressure. Despite Prannoy catching up, Axselen won the first game easily at 21-14.

HS Prannoy looked impressive initially in the second game. Axselen showed his aggression with an 11-8 lead at the interval. After the break, Prannoy showed great pouncing on key moments and took the lead before maintaining it. The Indian won the second game easily at 21-17 to force the game into a decider.

The third game was a closely fought affair as both players took points alternately. HS Prannoy proved his worth after a 12-12 scoreline before winning it by 21-18 to cap off a memorable season.

HS Prannoy could not qualify for the semi-finals of the BWF World tour finals. His performance in the year-ending tournament was scratchy.

Prannoy lost to Kodai Naraoka of Japan in three games. The Indian lost the first game by 12-21 before winning the second game with a 21-9 scoreline. Prannoy provided some resistance but lost the third and deciding game by 17-21.  

The second match saw HS Prannoy losing to Lu Guang Zu of China in three thrilling games. It was a closely fought game right from the word as Prannoy lost the first game by 21-23.

Prannoy made a strong comeback in the second game winning it by 21-17. It was another closely fought affair in deciding the game before the Indian lost by 19-21 to be knocked out of the semi-finals stage.

HS Prannoy handed Victor Axselen his first since March 2021 and would be hoping for better performances in 2023.
