India announces squad for Hockey World Cup 2023

 The Indian men’s hockey team announced their squad for the 2023 World Cup to be played in Rourkela and Bhuvneshwar starting on 13th January and till 29th January.

Harmanpreet Singh will lead the squad and hopes to bring success in front of home crowd. The goalkeepers include experienced P Sreejesh and Krishna Pathak.

The forwards include Mandeep Singh, Lalit Kumar Upadhyay, Abhishek, Sukhjeet Singh. Jarmanpreet Singh, Surender Kumar, Harmanpreet Singh, Varun Kumar, Amit Rohidas, Nilam Sanjeep comprise defenders.

Varun Kumar, Harmanpreet Singh comprises drag flickers. Manpreet Singh, Hardik Singh, Nilkanta Sharma, Shamsher Singh, Vivek Sagar Prasad, Akashdeep Singh comprises midfielders.

The Indian team would hope to perform well in home conditions as they won their only World Cup title in 1975. They have been clubbed in Group D along with England, Spain, and Wales. The top team in each group will qualify for the quarterfinals stage while the 2nd and 3rd place team will play crossovers from another group.

India will begin their tournament against Spain on 13th January at Rourkela, followed by 15th January against England at Rourkela. They will finish the group stage against Wales on 19th January at Kalinga Stadium, Bhuvneshwar.

Vivek Sagar Prasad makes a return to the squad after missing the 5-match Test series against Australia due to an injury. Rajkumar Pal and Jugraj Singh have been the tournament's standby players.
