Ashes 2023 2nd Day 2nd Test: Match hangs in the balance
The 2nd
day of the 2nd Ashes Test match proved to be an entertaining one
between England and Australia played at Lords, London on 29 June 2023.
Starting on
the overnight score of 339 for 5, Alex Carey looked in good touch with second
new ball before Stuart Broad got rid of him with a review. The umpire gave not
out but on review it was overturned to out as it was hitting the stumps. Carey
and Smith added 35 runs for the 6th wicket. Mitchell Starc was
promoted ahead of Cummins but could not do much.
Pat Cummins
looked in decent touch showing hitting and keeping scoreboard ticking. Steve Smith
completed his 32nd century off 169 deliveries. Josh Tongue dismissed
Smith with a simple catch to Duckett. Cummins and Smith added 35 runs for the 8th
wicket. Tongue and Robinson completed the job dismissing Lyon and Josh
Hazlewood to bowl out Australia.
Zak Crawley
and Ben Duckett played cautiously as England ended the first session at 13 for
0. After the lunch break, England openers showed intent with some lovely shots
keeping the scoreboard not allowing the Australian bowlers to settle. The
veteran spinner Nathan Lyon eventually dismissed Crawley with a good stumping
by Carey. Crawley and Duckett added 91 runs for the opening wicket.
Ollie Pope
came to the crease showing his aggressive intent keeping the scoreboard ticking
along with Duckett. Duckett completed fifty off 84 balls. Pope and Duckett
looked in complete control as England went into the tea break at 145 for 1.
After the
break, Duckett and Pope continued to milk the Australian bowlers. Nathan Lyon
limped off the field due to an injury. Cameron Green dismissed Ollie Pope with
short ball tactics with easy catch to Smith. Pope and Duckett added 97 runs for
the 2nd wicket. Joe Root got a reprieve as he was dismissed by a no-ball.
The Australian pacers used short ball tactics. Josh Hazlewood dismissed Duckett
providing easy catch to Warner at fine leg two short of century.
Mitchell
Starc dismissed Joe Root with another short ball as Smith took lovely catch bringing
back Australia into the game. Brook was given a reprieve as Marnus Labuschagne dropped
a chance. Brook and captain Stokes looked assured against part time bowling of
Travis Head. England ended the 2nd day on 278 for 4. Starc, Lyon,
Cameron Green and Hazlewood grabbed 1 wicket each.
