Ashes 2023 Test 1 Day 4: Match Heading Towards Exciting Finish
The fourth
day of the 1st Ashes Test saw some exciting cricket as the match is
evenly poised played at Edgbaston, Birmingham on 19 June 2023.
Starting on
the overnight score of 28 for 2, Joe Root began the day on attacking mindset
taking on Australian pacers with ramp shots keeping scoreboard ticking and not
allowing them to settle. Pat Cummins produce a brilliant yorker to dismiss
Ollie Pope. Root and Pope added 50 runs for the 3rd wicket.
Harry Brook
came to the crease and showed intent right from word go putting pressure on Australian
bowlers. Nathan Lyon dismissed dangerous Joe Root stumped by Alex Carey. Root
and Brook added 52 runs for the 4th wicket. Lyon then got rid of
Brook with a simple catch to Labuschagne bringing back Australia back into
game. Jonny Bairstow was given out by the umpire but on review it was
overturned too not out. At the end of the first session, England scored 155 for
5.
After the
lunch session, Stokes and Bairstow showed intent with an attacking mindset
keeping the scoreboard ticking. Bairstow was dismissed trying to reverse sweep
Nathan Lyon ending 46 runs partnership for the 6th wicket. Pat
Cummins produced a peach getting rid of England captain Ben Stokes. Moeen Ali
looked in decent touch before Josh Hazlewood dismissed him down the leg catch.
Labuschagne
took a stunning catch but on third umpire was deemed not out due to ball
hitting the ground. Stuart Broad was given out as the decision overturned as
hit inside edge. Nathan Lyon eventually got rid of Ollie Robinson caught by
Cameron Green at long-on. James Anderson and Stuart Broad hit some vital runs
before Australian captain Cummins bought himself on getting rid of Anderson to
bowl England out for 273. With this dismissal, the umpires called it tea.
Chasing 281
runs to win, David Warner looked in good touch against disciplined England
bowling of Anderson, Broad. Usman Khawaja was given a reprieve as the ball went
between keeper and Root. Both Australian openers kept the scoreboard ticking
making life tough for hosts.
Ollie
Robinson produced a peach to dismiss Warner ending 61 runs opening partnership.
Stuart Broad was introduced into the attack and got rid of Labuschagne and
Steve Smith in quick succession, bringing England back. Scott Boland came as a
night watchman doing a brilliant job with attacking field set by Stokes.
Australia ended the fourth day on 107 for 3 needing 174 runs to win on final
day.
