ICC ODI World Cup Qualifiers Super Six Match 1: Zimbabwe beat spirited Oman in a high scoring affair.
Zimbabwe continued
their winning form as they defeated spirited Oman in a high scoring affair
played at Queens Sport Club, Bulawayo on 29 June 2023.
Oman
captain Zeeshan Maqsood won the toss and decided to field first. Craig Ervine was
given out by the umpire, but the decision was upheld as the ball pitching outside
leg. Ervine and Gumbie looked in decent touch keeping momentum going for
Zimbabwe. At the end of first 10 overs, Zimbabwe openers scored 40 without
losing any wickets.
Kallehmuallah
produced a beauty to dismiss Craig Ervine. Ervine and Gumbie added 46 runs for
the opening wicket. Fayyaz Butt dismissed the other opener Gumbie. Sean
Williams continued his brilliant form with aggressive stroke play along not
allowing Oman bowlers to settle. Wesley Medhevere looked in decent touch before
Oman captain Zeeshan Maqsood broke the partnership dismissing Medherve with a
simple stumping. Williams and Medherve added 64 runs for 3rd wicket.
Williams
completed his fifty off 43 balls and made the batting look easy with Sikandar
Raza. Both experienced batters kept the scoreboard ticking. Fayyaz Butt
produced a lovely ball to dismiss Raza. Williams and Raza added 102 runs for
the 4th wicket. Williams looked in great touch putting the bad
deliveries away completing his 3rd century this tournament of 81
deliveries. Williams kept hitting boundaries with ease. Fayyaz Butt struck to
dismiss Ryan Burl. Burl and Williams added 41 runs for the 5th wicket.
Sean
Williams was dismissed afterwards for a brilliant 142. Luke Jongwe provided the
impetus with quickfire cameo along with Richard Ngarava. At the end of 50
overs, Zimbabwe posted massive total of 332 for 7.
Chasing 333
runs to win, Oman got off to a worst start as Jatinder Singh was dismissed
cheaply by Blessing Muzarbani. The umpire gave not out but on review it was
overturned to out. Aqib Ilyas and Kashyap Prajapati looked in decent touch
keeping the scoreboard ticking. At the end of first 10 overs, Oman made 59 for
1.
IIyas and Prajapati looked in good touch keeping the
pressure on Zimbabwe bowlers. Raza got the breakthrough for the hosts
dismissing Ilyas with 83 runs partnership for 2nd wicket. Prajapati completed
his fifty off 50 deliveries. Zeeshan Maqsood injured himself and went off the
field. Ayaan Khan along with Prajapati showed some intent with some lovely
shots keeping scoreboard ticking. Prajapati scored his maiden ODI century off
93 deliveries. Muzarbani got much-needed breakthrough dismissing Prajapati with
stunning catch by Sikandar Raza. Prajapati and Ayaan Khan added 78 runs for the
3rd wicket.
Ngarava produced a lovely return catch to dismiss Shoaib
Khan as the required run rate climbed up. Tendai Chatara dismissed Naseem
Khushi providing easy catch to Medherve at covers. Khushi and Ayaan Khan added
31 runs for the 5th wicket. Ayaan Khan was dismissed trying to hit a
big shot caught by Wellington Masakadza. Luke Jongwe produced stunning catch
getting rid of Kallehmuallah denting the hopes of Oman win.
Mohammad Nadeem looked in superb touch putting pressure on
Zimbabwe bowlers with lusty shots. Chatara produced brilliant yorker to dismiss
Fayyaz Butt. Zeeshan Maqsood returned to bat after an injury. Ngarava bowled a
superb 49th over to end Oman hopes of winning the match. Zeeshan Maqsood
and Nadeem tried their best, but it was not enough. Zimbabwe registered 14 runs win to move closer
to qualification for WC 2023.
Zimbabwe 332 for 7 in 50 overs (Sean Williams 142, Jongwe
43*, Fayyaz Butt 4/79) beat Oman 318 for 9 in 50 overs ( Prajapati 103, Ayaan
Khan 47, Blessing Muzarbani 3/57, Tendai Chatara 3/73) by 14 runs.
