ICC ODI World Qualifiers Day 1: Craig Ervine and Sean Williams centuries help Zimbabwe thrash Nepal.
The opening
match of ICC ODI World Cup qualifiers saw hosts Zimbabwe thrash Nepal in a
one-sided encounter played at Harare Sports Club, Harare on 18 June 2023.
Zimbabwe
produced a dominating performance against Nepal at Harare Sports Club, Harare.
Zimbabwe captain Craig Ervine won the toss and decided to field first. Kushal
Burtel and Asif Sheikh began the innings on a decent note, scoring 45 runs in
the first 10 overs.
Bhurtel and
Sheikh kept putting pressure on Zimbabwe bowling line up not allowing them to
settle. Bhurtel looked solid completing half-century off 63 deliveries while
Sheikh also reached fifty of 82 deliveries. Nepal openers made the batting easy
before Wellington Masakadza dismissed Bhurtel one short of century. Both added
171 runs for the opening wicket laying a strong foundation for a decent total. Masakadza
got rid of other opener Asif Sheikh in same over.
Nepal
captain Rohit Paudel showed some intent keeping the scoreboard ticking along
with Kushal Malla. Ngarava got the breakthrough dismissing Rohit with easy
catch to wicketkeeper Madanane. Rohit and Kushal Malla added 72 runs for the 3rd
wicket. Zimbabwe bowlers made a good comeback by picking wickets at regular intervals
in death overs. At the end of 50 overs, Nepal posted 290 for 8.
Chasing
down 291 runs to win, Joylord Gombie began the innings with aggressive intent
keeping pressure on Nepal bowlers under pressure before Sompal Kami dismissed
Gombie. Gombie and Ervine added 45 runs for the opening wicket. At the end of
first 10 overs, Zimbabwe scored 52 for 1.
Craig
Ervine and Wesley Medhevere kept the momentum going for Zimbabwe as Nepal was
one bowler short as Kami went off field due to an injury. Ervine completed
half-century off 60 deliveries while Wesley Medhevere looked impressive. Gulsan
Jha dismissed Wesley Medhevere with short ball tactics. Ervine and Medherve
added 82 runs for the 2nd wicket.
The experienced
pair of Sean Williams and Craig Ervine made use of hampered bowling line up of
Nepal. Williams reached half-century off 41 deliveries while Craig Ervine
reached century from 111 deliveries. Williams and Ervine looked at ease keeping
the momentum going for Zimbabwe.
Sean
Williams reached century off 70 deliveries and ensured that Zimbabwe registered
comphrensive win over Nepal with 8 wickets remaining. Williams and Craig Ervine
added unbeaten 164 runs for the 3rd wicket.
Zimbabwe
291 for 2 in 44.1 overs ( Craig Ervine 121*, Sean Williams 102*, Sompal Kami
1/30) beat Nepal 290 for 8 in 50 overs ( Kushal Bhurtel 99, Aasif Sheikh 66,
Richard Ngarava 4/43, Wellington Masakadza 2/42) by 8 wickets.
For his 121
off 128 deliveries, Zimbabwe captain Sean Ervine was named the player of the
match. With this win, the hosts opened their account.
