Indonesia Open 2023: Satwik/Chirag Shetty wins historic title.
SatwikRankiReddy and Chirag Shetty registered a straight
game victory over Aaron Chia and Soh Woo Yik of Malaysia in straight games of
Super 1000 Indonesia Open played in Jakarta on 18 June 2023.
It was a great start by the Malaysian pair putting pressure
on Satwik/Chirag taking 3-0 lead initially and maintained lead before dynamic
duo made strong comeback to take successive points and keep momentum going for
Indian. At the mid-game interval, Satwik and Chirag had 11-9 lead. After the
break, the Indian pair continued their attacking style of play keeping pressure
on Aaron and Soh with lovely smashes winning first game at 21-18.
The second game began with both pairs taking alternate
points till 5-5 before the Indian pair kept pressure on Malaysian taking 11-7
lead at interval. Despite Aaron/ Soh efforts, Satwik/Chirag Shetty looked
composed winning the match easily by 21-17 to win their first ever Super 1000
title. It was a remarkable performance by Indian pair right through the
tournament.
Satwik/Chirag Shetty wins ensured that they became the first
Indian to win Super 1000 title. Lakshya Sen lost finals of All England
Badminton Championship last year while PV Sindhu reached the finals of 2019
edition.
The Indian pair played some lovely badminton in the entire
Indonesia Open tournament. They began their journey with straight game victory
over Christo/Thomas Popov of France in straight games by 21-12, 11-7 as their
opponent retired.
They then defeated He J T and Zhou H D of China in straight
games 21-17, 21-15 to move into the quarterfinals. It was a remarkable
performance by the Indian pair defeating top seeded F Alfian and Aridanto of
Indonesia in straight games by 21-13, 21-13 to move into the semi-finals of the
tournament.
Satwik/Chirag Shetty then defeated Kang/Seo of South Korea
in three thrilling games by 17-21, 21-19, 21-18 to progress into the finals of
Super 1000 Indonesia Open 2023.
The Indian pair won the Super 500 Thailand Open in 2019,
Super 750 French Open twice in 2019 and 2022. Satwik/Chirag registered their 2nd
title during 2023 winning the Super 300 Swiss Open and then Super 1000
Indonesia Open.
