Canada Open 2023: Lakshya Sen wins first title this year.
The Indian star shuttler Lakshya Sen won his first title of 2023 with a closely fought straight-game win over Li Shifeng of China at the Super 500 Canada Open played on Sunday.
Lakshya and Li began the first game on an even keel with 2
points each. The Indian looked better with some lovely shots to keep the Chinese
under pressure. Sen played with aggression including smashes not allowing his
opponent to do his best. After the break, Li made a strong comeback into the
game playing some lovely badminton and leveling scores at 15-15. Sen showed
his class with points in succession winning the first game by 21-18.
The second game began with a closely fought affair before
the Chinese showed his class putting enough pressure on the Indian. At the
mid-game break, Li had dominating 11-7 lead. After the break, the Chinese looked
impressive and looked in complete control to take the second game with a 20-16
lead. Lakshya Sen showed great fighting spirit taking 6 successive points
winning it by 22-20 to win the first title of 2023.
Lakshya Sen had a dream run in the Canada Open 2023. The
Indian began the tournament with a straight-game victory over Thailand Kulvant
Vitisdarn 21-18, 21-15 to progress into the second round. He then defeated pre-qualifier
Y Coelho of Brazil with another straight-game victory with a 21-15, 21-11 win and
move into the quarterfinals.
He then defeated another qualifier J Carragi of Belgium in
three games 21-8, 17-21, 21-10 to progress into the semi-finals. Sen then
produced dominating performance winning against Kenta Nishimoto of Japan in two
straight games by 21-17, 21-14 to move into the finals. Sen won against Li with
a closely fought affair winning in straight games winning the first title this
year. This win of Sen will gain lots of confidence for the upcoming Super 300 US Open
starting 11th July.
PV Sindhu also had a decent run in the tournament reaching the semi-finals. She started the tournament with straight game win over T Ng of
Canada 21-16, 21-9. Sindhu got a walkover from N Nidara of Japan in the second
round. She then defeated Gao F J of China in straight games by 21-13, 21-7 to
move into the semi-finals.
She lost to top-seeded Akane Yamaguchi in the semi-finals
with a straight-game loss by 14-21, 15-21. Lakshya Sen, Sindhu, Sai Praneeth, Garaga, and Panjala will take part in US Open.
