FIH Olympic Qualifiers: Indian Women’s stay alive with easy win
The Indian women kept their hopes of qualifying for the Paris Olympics with a comprehensive win over New Zealand in 2nd match played at Ranchi on 14th January 2024.
It was an
ideal start for the Indian women’s team as they got a goal in the very first
minute itself with lovely field by Sangeeta Kumari. New Zealand made a strong
comeback with a superb penalty corner by Hull Megan in the 9th minute
to level the scores at 1-1. The hosts showed their class as Udita scored from
penalty corner in the 12th minute giving India a 2-1 lead. Dung made it
3-1 with a superb field goal in the 14th minute and ended 3-1 at the
end of the first quarter.
The second
quarter began with the Indian team earning a penalty corner but was unable to convert it into goal. Both teams tried their best to get goals but neither of them got goals.
At the end of the first half, India led 3-1. New Zealand had 8 circle penetrations
while India earned 5 of them. India scored 1 penalty corner from 4 shots while
New Zealand scored 1 out of 3.
It was an
aggressive beginning from both teams but none of them converted into chances. Both the Indian and New Zealand team showed their class but could not put pressure on
others. New Zealand earned a penalty corner but the variation did not yield any
results. The Indian team earned a penalty corner but the New Zealand goalkeeper
saved it. It was attacking play by the hosts as Navneet could convert it into a goal.
At the end of 3rd quarter, the Indian women’s team still led 3-1.
The fourth
quarter saw both sides scrappy play with missed passes. The New Zealand team put
enough pressure on the Indian team. It was a great performance by the Indian defense as
they did not allow the Black Sticks to score goals. Indian women’s team won the
second match by 3-1.
The Indian
women’s team dominated with possession with 52 percent as compared to 48 by New
Zealand. Both teams got 5 penalty corners scoring 1 goal each.
Indian
women’s team will play Italy in their final game on 16th January 2024.
Both teams have 3 points each with the same goal difference.
