Malaysia Open 2024: Satwik/Chirag Shetty progress into semi-finals
The number 2 ranked Indian pairing of Satwik/Chirag Shetty stormed into the semi-finals of the Super 1000 Malaysia Open with a dominating win over the Chinese pair played in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 12th January 2024.
Chirag/Satwik produced a dominating performance over the Chinese
pairing He Je Ting and Ren X Y right from the word go. The Indian pair showed
attacking skills making life tough for the opponent taking 11-2 lead at the
mid-gam break. After the break, Satwik/Chirag created enough pressure and won
the first set easily by 21-11.
The second game was a one-sided affair as Satwik/Chirag kept the pressure on the Chinese pairing with smashes and drop shots. At the mid-game break, the Indian pairing took a commanding lead. After the break, the Indians were never allowed
and won the 2nd set easily to qualify for the semi-finals.
Satwik/Chirag Shetty have been dominating in the previous 2
rounds. The first round saw the Indian pairing defeating MS Fikri and Maulana
of Indonesia. It was a closely fought encounter as Satwik/Chirag showed great
fighting spirit before winning the first game by 21-18.
The Indian pairing struggled initially trailing 4-11 at the
mid-game break. After the break, Satwik/Chirag fought strongly before winning 2nd
set by 21-19 to qualify for the second round.
Satwik/Chirag defeated Corvee and Labar of France in two
straight games. The Indian pairing dominated the French pair in the first set winning
by 21-11.
The second game saw the Indian pairing looking out of sorts initially
before making a strong comeback to equal the scores and then win the second set by
21-18 to move into the quarterfinals.
It was a tame end to Tanisha Crasto and Ashwini Ponnappa's
journey as they lost in the quarterfinals to Iwanaga and Nakanshi of Japan in
two straight games. The Indian pairing could not match the speed of their
opponents losing by 15-21, 13-21 to be knocked out in the quarterfinals.
Kidambi Srikanth stunned Jonathan Christie with a thrilling
three-set win in the first round with a scoreline of 12-21, 21-18, 21-16 to progress
into the next round. He was outplayed by his opponent Na Ka Long Anus by 13-21,
17-21.
