Malaysia Open 2024: Satwik/Chirag Stuns World Champions To Qualify For Finals

 Satwik/Chirag Shetty showed their fighting spirit as they stunned World Champions Kang Min Hyuk and Seo Jeung Jae of South Korea in the semi-finals of the Super 1000 Malaysia Open played in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 13th January 2024.

The Indian pairing started the first game on a positive note putting pressure on the World Champions. They continued their attacking style before Seo and Kang took 3 three points in succession. At the mid-game break, the Indians had an 11-8 lead. After the break, it was closely fought as the Korean pair tried to make a comeback, but Satwik/Chirag held onto their nerves to win the first game at 21-18.

Both pairs began the second game on an even keel before the Korean pair put enough pressure on Satwik/Chirag and maintained the lead at the mid-game break. After the interval, Kang and Seo showed their attacking skills making life tough for the Indian pairing. Things looked bleak with the Indians trailing 14-20. Satwik/Chirag played with great skills putting enough pressure on the Korean pair. They kept on hitting attacking shots as Kang and Seo committed lots of mistakes.

Satwik/Chirag saved six match points to level the scores at 20-20. The Indians held onto the nerves to win the second set 22-20 moving into finals. It was a remarkable performance by Satwik/Chirag who never gave up and made a stunning comeback to defeat the 2023 World Champions.

Satwik/Chirag became the first Indian pair to qualify for the Super 1000 Malaysia Open. They will now face the winner of Liang/Wang and Takuro Hoki and Kobayashi of Japan in the finals tomorrow.

In other matches, Denmark’s Victor Axelsen lost in the semi-finals to Shi Yuqi of China in three games. The Chinese won the first game by 21-12 before Axelsen won the second game by 21-19. Shi then showed his fighting spirit to win the decider by 21-17 to move into the finals. He will face Anders Antonsen.

Tai Tzu Ying defeated Chen Yufei in a three-game thriller. Tai lost the first game by 17-21 before winning the next two games by 21-15, 21-18 to move into the finals. She will face An Se Young of South Korea in the finals.
