Badminton Asia Team Championship 2024: Indian Women’s Team Stun China
The Indian women’s team stunned favorites and top-seeded China in a thrilling contest played at Shah Alam, Malaysia on 14th February 2024.
PV Sindhu returned to court after a long layoff and showed
her class with an impressive straight-sets win over Han Yue. The star Indian
shuttler looked in great control and did not her Chinese opponent to win it by
21-17, 21-15 giving India a 1-0 lead in the tie.
The first doubles saw Ashwini Ponnappa and Tanisha Crasto
suffer straight-game loss to Liu and Tan. It was an impressive performance by
the Indian duo but lost the match by 19-21, 16-21 as Chinese equalled at 1-1.
Asmitha Chaila was completely outplayed by Wang Zhi in two
straight games. The Indian lost by 13-21, 15-21 giving China a 2-1 lead.
The pairing of Tressa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand produced a
stunning performance defeating Li and Luo of China in three games. Tressa and
Gayatri lost the first game comfortably by 10-21. Indian pairing showed great
fight and courage to win the next two games with scorelines of 21-18 and 21-17 to
level the tie at 2-2.
16-year-old Anmol Kharab showed great fighting spirit to defeat
Wu Luo in three games. The first game was a closely fought encounter as both
players fought for each point before the Indian held onto her nerves to win it
22-20. The second game was one-sided affair as Chinese won by 21-14 to force it
a decider.
The third game saw both players taking alternate points
making life tough for each other. After the break also, it was toe-toe-to-contest that
went right down the wire. 16-year-old Anmol held onto her nerves and won the third
game 21-18 to register an upset 3-2 victory over China. With this win, India will
finish top while China finish 2nd. Anmol was the 479 ranked player in
the world while Luo at 149.
