WPL 2024 Match 8: UP Warriorz Register Commanding Win Over Gujarat Giants

 

UP Warriorz registered their second successive win with a resounding performance over Gujarat Giants in match number 8 of WPL 2024 played at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru on 1st March.

UP Warriorz captain Alyssa Healy won the toss and decided to field first. Laura Woolvardt was included in XI opening the innings with Beth Mooney. With some good shots, the South African opener Laura showed intent putting pressure on Anjali Sarvani. Sophie Ecclestone got the breakthrough getting rid of Captain Mooney caught by Harris. Mooney and Laura added 40 runs laying a strong foundation. At the end of the first six overs, GG scored 41 for 1.

Laura and Harleen Doel struggled against disciplined UP Warriorz bowlers. Both batters ensured that Gujarat Giants end first timeout at 58 for 1. After the timeout, Laura was dismissed by Ecclestone. Harleen Doel's struggle caught by Sarvani leaving Gujarat in trouble. The second timeout took place with the scoreboard reading 83 for 3. Ash Gardner and Litchfield looked in some form with positive shots not allowing UP Warriorz bowlers to settle.  

Both batters looked in decent touch with some lusty blows that changed the momentum. Ecclestone struck getting rid of Gardner caught by Atapattu. Gardner and Litchfield added 52 runs for 4th wicket. A superb direct throw by Saima Thakur ended the innings of Litchfield. Chamari bowled the final over giving away just 4 runs as they restricted Gujarat Giants to 142 for 5. Sophie Ecclestone was the pick of bowlers for UP with figures of 3 for 20 in 4 overs.

Chasing 143 runs to win, Alyssa Healy and Kiran Navgire put enough pressure on Gujarat Giants bowlers, especially against Meghana Singh. Tanuja Kanwar got the early breakthrough in getting rid of Navgire. Navgire and Healy added 42 runs for the opening wicket.   

Healy looked in great touch with some superb shots along with debutant Chamari. Bryce got a big wicket of Healy trying to hit a big shot. At the end of the first six overs, UP Warriorz scored 59 for 2.

Grace Harris came to the crease and made the batting look easy putting enough pressure on GG bowlers. At the end of the first timeout, UP Warriorz raced away to 73 for 2.

Kanwar struck getting rid of Chamari caught by Woolvardt at deep square leg. Meghana Singh grabbed another wicket dismissing Shweta Sehrawat to give GG a sniff. Grace Harris looked in sublime touch keeping the scoreboard with boundaries along with Deepti Sharma. Harris reached fifty off 30 balls ensured that UP Warriorz chased down the target with 26 balls to spare. Harris and Deepti put on unbeaten 53 runs for the 4th wicket.

With this win, UP Warriorz sits at number 3 place and would look to continue their winning run in upcoming matches. For her unbeaten 60 off 33 balls, Grace Harris was named the player of the match.
