Eng vs WI 2nd Test 2nd Day: Kavem Hodge Scores Maiden Test Century Leading West Indies Fightback

The second day of the 2nd test match saw the West Indies batting unit showing some fight at Trent Bridge, Nottingham on 19th July 2024.

After bundling England out for 416 on the opening day, West Indies openers Kraigg Braithwaite and Mike Louis started positively showing intent keeping the scoreboard ticking making life tough for England on a placid batting paradise.

Mike Louis played a rash stroke against Shoaib Bashir’s bowling caught by Harry Brook. Louis and Braithwaite added 53 runs for the opening wicket. Braithwaite looked in good touch putting the bad deliveries away. Atkinson showed his courage with a short delivery getting rid of Braithwaite caught at short leg by Ollie Pope. West Indies went into trouble as Kirk McKenzie also gifted away his wicket to leave West Indies in trouble.

After the lunch break, Alick Athanaze and Kavem Hodge showed great fighting spirit keeping scoreboard ticking with positive strokes. Both West Indies batters made the batting look easy. Athanaze got his fifty off 67 balls while Hodge also completed his half-century off 85 balls to keep West Indies' hopes alive.

Athanaze and Hodge kept the momentum going for West Indies with some lovely shots that kept England on the back foot. The visitors went into the tea break at 212 for 3.

Athanaze and Hodge continued to milk runs keeping the scoreboard ticking. England captain Stokes eventually ended the superb partnership getting rid of Athanaze caught by Harry Brook. Athanaze and Hodge added 175 runs for the 4th wicket.

Kavem Hodge completed his maiden Test century with a straight boundary off 143 balls. Hodge and Holder stitched up another valuable partnership for the West Indies. Chris Woakes struck a peach getting rid of Hodge for 120. Hodge and Holder put on 46 runs for the 5th wicket.

Jason Holder and Joshua Da Silva played with an aggressive mindset keeping the scoreboard ticking. England captain Stokes took the second new ball in the final over of the day. Mark Wood went off the field after feeling a little sore. Holder and Da Silva added so far 46 runs for the 6th wicket. West Indies ended the 2nd day with 351 runs for the loss of 5 wickets.

West Indies 351 for 5 in 84 overs (Kavem Hodge 120, Kraigg Braithwaite 48, Shoaib Bashir 2/100) trail England 416 in 88.3 overs (Ollie Pope 121, Stokes 69, Alazzari Joseph 3/98) by 65 runs.
