Paris Olympics 2024: India Beat Ireland To Top Group

 

The Indian men’s hockey team registered the 2nd win of the tournament with a comfortable win over Ireland in Paris on 30th July 2024.

It was a great start for the Indian team as they earned a penalty corner in the very first minute, the shot was well blocked by Ireland's defense. India was awarded a penalty stroke with Manpreet Singh fouled inside the D. Harmanpreet Singh converted a stroke into a goal in the 11th minute to give a 1-0 lead. India kept the pressure on Ireland's defense with aggressive intent. At the end of the first quarter, India led 1-0.

The second quarter saw the Indian team lose a review for a penalty corner. India earned three penalty corners before Harmanpreet Singh converted the fourth one into a goal in the 19th minute to double the lead. India played attacking hockey keeping pressure on Ireland's defense as they ended the first half with a scoreline of 2-0.

India began the third quarter on an aggressive note putting enough pressure on Ireland's defense. Ireland then showed great intent with lovely moves earning multiple penalty corners but could not convert it into a goal. They earned 3 more penalty corners in the dying minutes, but it did not yield any result. At the end of the third quarter, the scores remained 2-0 in favor of India.

Ireland earned another penalty corner in the initial minutes of the final quarter. The Irish put on an excellent display of hockey, but the Indian defense remained solid denying Ireland goals.

Both teams were one player short awarded a green card. India attacked but could not stretch the lead. Indian team won their 3rd successive match by 2-0. They remained unbeaten with 2 wins and 1 draw so far in the Paris Olympics.

India is currently at the top of the points table. Australia and Belgium will play each other in a pulsating contest today. They will now face defending Champions Belgium in their next match on 1st August 2024.
