Women’s Asia Cup 2024: Nepal Women Create History
The Nepal
Women’s Team created history as they stunned favorites UAE in the first match
of the Asia Cup 2024 played at Rangiriri International Stadium, Dambulla on 19th
July.
Nepal
captain Indu Barma won the toss and decided to field first. It was an ideal
start for Nepal as a mix-up resulted in a run out of UAE captain Esha Oza. Sabnim
Rai struck with a lovely delivery to dismiss Rinitha Rai. It was a disciplined bowling
effort by Nepal bowlers as they kept tight lines and lengths not allowing the
UAE batters to score runs easily.
Indu Barma
struck in her first over dismissing Theertha Satheesh with a simple return
catch. At the end of six overs, UAE made 38 for 3.
Barma got
her 2nd wicket getting rid of Samaria to leave UAE in deep trouble.
Khushi Sharma and Kavisha Egodage steadied the ship taking singles and keeping
the strike rotating maintaining the pressure on Nepal bowlers. Maraisini
produced a much-needed wicket for Nepal dismissing Kavisha with a simple catch
to Joshi at backward point. Kavisha and Khushi Sharma added 32 runs for the 5th
wicket.
Khushi Sharma
and Heena kept the shots going keeping the momentum going for UAE. A superb
piece of throw from Kunwar and a run out by Barma resulted in the wicket of
Heena. Khushi Sharma also went to the very next delivery. It was a disciplined bowling
effort by Nepal bowlers as they restricted UAE to 115 for 8 in 20 overs. Indu
Barma finished with figures of 3 for 19 in 4 overs.
Chasing 116
runs to win, Samjhana Khadka showed intent right from the word go putting
pressure on lackluster UAE bowling. Kavisha
got the breakthrough dismissing Sita Magar cheaply. Samjhana and Magar added 39
runs for the opening wicket. At the end of the first six overs, Nepal ended on
39 losing 1 wicket.
Kabita
Kunwar, Captain Indu Barma, and Rubina Chetry could not do much to Nepal’s
cause. Samjhana looked in sublime touch keeping the strike rotating and
completed her maiden fifty off 35 balls. Samjhana hit the winning runs with a
boundary to help Nepal register a 6-wicket win with 23 balls to spare. For her unbeaten
72, Samjhana was named the player of the match award. For UAE, Kavisha finished
with figures of 3 for 12 in 4 overs.
