Women's Asia Cup 2024: Sri Lanka Women Register Easy Win Over Bangladesh
Sri Lanka
began the tournament with a resounding win over Bangladesh in their opening
match. Bangladesh captain Nigar Sultana won the toss and decided to bat first.
The
left-arm medium-pace bowler Prabodhani struck twice in the first over
dismissing Dilara Akter and Rubiya Haider. Fernando got rid of Ishma Tanjim to
leave Bangladesh struggling at 6 for 3.
Captain
Nigar Sultana looked impressive while Shorifua Khatun struggled. Sultana showed
her class putting on 31 runs for the 5th wicket while Khatun
contributed just 5 runs.
Shorna
Akhter and Nigar Sultana showed some fight against good-quality Sri Lankan
bowling. Both added 31 runs for the 7th wicket that allowed
Bangladesh go past 100. Nigar Sultana remained not out on 48 as Bangladesh made
111 for 8 in 20 overs. Priyadarshini and Prabodhani grabbed 2 wickets each
while Kumari, Dilhari, and Atthpatu took 1 wicket each.
Chasing 112
runs to win, Chamari and Vishmi Gunaratne started off brilliantly for Sri Lanka
putting on 32 runs for opening wicket. After the first six overs, Harshita
Samawickrama and Gunaratne put on excellent display keeping the scoreboard
ticking and not allowing the Bangladesh bowlers to settle.
Samawickrama
fell with a simple return catch to Nahida Akther. Samawickrama and Gunaratne added
54 runs for the 2nd wicket. Gunaratne kept things on one end with
fifty off 43 balls. Sri Lanka won the match by 7 wickets with 17 balls to
spare.
