Asian Champions Trophy 2024: India Continue Their Unbeaten Run
The Indian
Men’s Hockey Team registered a hard-fought win over South Korea in their penultimate
match of the Asian Champions Trophy 2024 played in Hulunbir, Inner Mongolia on
12th September.
India
attacked right from the word go putting pressure on the South Korean defense. Arijit
Singh Hundal scored a beautiful hit inside the circle in the 8th
minute to give a 1-0 lead to the defending Champions. Indian captain Harmanpreet
Singh scored from a penalty corner in the 9th minute to double the
lead. At the end of the first quarter, the scores remained 2-0 in favor of
India.
South Korea
produced a good chance in the second quarter, but the shot was well saved by
Suraj Kakera. Korea earned a penalty corner which was overturned by a review by
Harmanpreet Singh. The Korean team put enough pressure with aggressive moves
but could not convert the chances. India eventually got a chance to score a goal,
but Abhishek’s shot was defended by South Korea. Right at the stroke of the first
half, Hyun Yang converted the penalty corner into a goal to reduce the margin to
1-2.
After a disappointing
2nd quarter, the Indian team kept the pressure on the South Korean team
but could not yield any goals. Harmanpreet Singh converted the second penalty
corner in the 43rd minute to restore the 2 goals lead. At the end of
the third quarter, India led 3-1.
It was a
great start for South Korea in the 4th quarter with a penalty
corner. The shot was well saved by Suraj Kakera. South Korea tried to attack
but, Kakera produced some lovely saves to deny them a goal. It was a closely
fought encounter as India registered their 4th successive win. They are likely to stay at the top of the points table.
India will
face arch-rivals Pakistan in their final league game to be played on 14th
September 2024.
