Asian Men’s Champions Trophy 2024: India Starts The Tournament With A Resounding Win
The Defending Champions India starts the Asian Men’s Champions Trophy Hockey tournament with a resounding win over the hosts China played at Hulunbir, Inner Mongolia, China on 8th September 2024.
It was a cautious start by both teams in the initial minutes.
India earned their first penalty corner; the shot was well saved by the Chinese
goalkeeper. After the save, China went to counterattack did not yield any
result. A superb shot by Jugraj Singh and a deflection by Sukhjeet Singh in the
14th minute gave India a 1-0 lead, ending the first quarter at the same
scoreline.
India replaced Krishan Pathak by Suraj Kakera in the 2nd
quarter. There was not much action in the first few minutes before Uttam Singh
scored from a rebound after saves by the Chinese goalkeeper during the 27th
minute doubling India’s lead. At the end of the first half, India had a
comfortable 2-0 lead.
It was a great start for the defending champions India in
the third quarter with Abhishek Sharma scored from a reverse flick during the 32nd
minute to increase their lead. Krishna Pathak returned to goalkeeping. India
also earned a PC but could not convert it into a goal. China earned a penalty
corner and asked for a penalty stroke for deliberate body obstruction. The PC did
not yield anything as the shot went wide off the goal. India ended the third
quarter with a 3-0 lead.
India’s defense was great as they did not allow the Chinese
forward to score goals. Ao Yang was awarded a green card meaning 2 minute suspension. India put enough pressure on the Chinese defense with 2 back-to-back
penalty corners but did not yield anything.
Jugraj Singh took the penalty corner as Harmanpreet Singh
was not on the field. China earned two PC’s but was not able to convert it into
a goal. The defending Champions India began with a 3-0 lead.
India will face Japan in their next match to be played on 9th September 2024.
Day 1 Matches
The first two matches of the day saw South Korea play Japan
with a thrilling 5-5 draw. It was an amazing effort by both teams with South Korea
making a comeback.
In the second match, Pakistan and Malaysia played a 2-2 draw.
Pakistan led 2-0 before Malaysia scored 2 goals.
