Eng vs SL 3rd Test 3rd Day: Sri Lanka On Course For A Famous Win
The Sri
Lankan Cricket Team has put on an excellent performance to be on course for a
famous win on the 3rd day of the 3rd test match played at
Kennington Oval, London on 8th September 2024.
Starting on
the overnight score of 211 for 5, Dhananjaya de Silva and Kamindu Mendis began
off brightly. Josh Hull struck the first blow of the day dismissing Dhananjaya
caught at fine leg by Shoaib Bashir. Both added 127 runs for the 6th
wicket. With the scoreboard reading 223 for 6, the rain arrived, and the match
was stopped.
After the
rain break, Chris Woakes struck dismissing well-set Kamindu Mendis caught by
Joe Root at slips. Josh Hull got rid of Vishwa Fernando with a lovely delivery.
Olly Stone troubled Rathnayake and eventually dismissed him to leave Sri Lanka
in trouble. Ashita Fernando and Lahiru Kumara added valuable runs before Bashir
got Ashita Fernando caught by Jamie Smith. England bundled Sri Lanka out for
263 with a lead of 62 runs.
Ben Duckett
and Dan Lawrence began the innings aggressively before Ashita Fernando got rid
of Duckett with a simple catch to Vishwa Fernando caught at mid-on. Right at
the stroke of lunch break, Kumara struck dismissing England captain Pope taking
inside edge onto the stumps bringing Lanka into the game. At the end of the
first session, England reached 35 for 2.
Kumara
struck with a huge blow dismissing Dan Lawrence with a lovely catch by Dinesh
Chandimal. Vishwa Fernando struck twice in quick succession dismissing Root and
Brook to leave the hosts struggling. Kumara got rid of Chris Woakes to leave
them in deep trouble at 70 for 6.
Rathnayake
showed his skills with a superb delivery to dismiss Gus Atkinson. Jamie Smith
played with aggression attacking the Lankan bowlers. He timed the ball
brilliantly with some lovely shots. Olly Stone gave good support as Smith
continued his superb strokes. Ollie Smith reached fifty off 43 deliveries that
gave some hope of England giving a good target. Vishwa Fernando struck getting
rid of dangerous Jamie Smith caught by Kusal Mendis. Smith and Olly Stone added
58 runs for the 8th wicket.
Kumara and
Vishwa Fernando finished off the innings bundling England out for 156 in their
2nd innings to Sri Lanka a target of 219 runs to win.
Chasing 219
runs to win, Pathum Nissanka looked in great touch with superb strokes against
Atkinson, Chris Woakes not allowing them to settle. Chris Woakes took a sharp
return catch getting rid of Dimuth Karaunate. Nissanka and Karunaratne added 39
runs for the 1st wicket.
Nissanka looked
in great shape while Kusal Mendis played with intent not allowing the England
bowlers to settle. Nissanka reached fifty off just 42 deliveries, making life
tough for the hosts. Kusal Mendis also timed the ball well, keeping the
scoreboard ticking. Both Lankan batters ensured that the visitors ended day 3
on 94 for 1 with 125 runs to win.
