FIH Pro Hockey League 2024/25: Indian Women’s Team Starts The Season With A Thrilling Win
The Indian
Women’s Hockey team started the 2024/25 FIH Pro Hockey League season with a
thrilling win over England played at Kalinga Stadium, Bhuvneshwar on 15th
February.
The first
quarter began with the Indian women’s team putting pressure on the England
defense. After an initial struggle, Savita Punia produced a superb save. India
earned their first penalty corner of the match which was converted from a
deflection by Vaishnavi in the 6th minute to give the hosts a 1-0 lead. The
England team decided to review the decision, but the goal stood. Bourne scored
a superb deflection goal in the 12th minute as England equaled the
score at 1-1. Savita Punia showed her class with another lovely save. At the
end of the first quarter, the scoreline ended at 1-1.
The England
team began the second quarter on a positive note with aggressive moves, but the
Indian defense remained solid. Both teams had chances to convert, but the
defense looked cautious not allowing scoring goals. India earned their 2nd
penalty corner which was converted by Deepika in the 25th minute not
allowing Pritchard any chances of save. Indian team kept the pressure on the
England defense and maintained the pressure. At the end of the first half,
India led 2-1.
It was a
slow start in the third quarter before the Indian team missed a golden chance
to make it 3-1. Manisha was awarded a green card meaning two minutes
suspension. Savita Punia produced another lovely save denying England equalized
the scores. India earned their first penalty corner of this quarter as Deepika’s
shot went wide off goal post. India still led 2-1 at the end of the third
quarter.
England began
the fourth quarter on a good note with 3 penalty corners. The first shot went
above the goalpost. Savita Punia produced another superb save from the second penalty
corner. India’s defense remained solid as Vaishnavi denied England to level the
scores. England decided to remove Pritchard from goalkeeping. They took advantage
of 11 outfield players as Fiona Crackers produced a superb field goal in the 58th
minute, allowing England to make it 2-2.
Navdeep Kaur
produced a lovely shot that did not allow Pritchard any chances to save in the
59th minute to give India a 3-2 lead. It was an amazing performance
by the Indian team. They will again play England on Sunday.
