FIH Pro Hockey League 2024/25: Indian Women’s Team Beat Netherlands In A Thrilling Contest
The Indian women’s hockey team ended the home leg with a thrilling win over Netherlands at Kalinga Stadium, Bhuvneshwar on 25th February 2025.
After a
closely fought 2-4 loss in the first match against the Netherlands yesterday, the
visitors began the first quarter on a positive note putting enough pressure on the
Indian defense. They kept piling up consistent moves but could not construct
goals. At the end of the first quarter, the scores remained 0-0.
It was a
great start to the Netherlands team in the 2nd quarter as they
earned a penalty corner. Sanders Pien scored from a great pass during the 17th
minute to give the Netherlands a 1-0 lead. The visitors showed intent keeping
consistent pressure on the Indian defense. Van der Elst Fly scored a superb
field goal in the 28th minute which doubled the lead for
Netherlands. At the end of the first half, Netherlands led 2-0.
The third
quarter saw the Indian team show great attacks on the Netherlands defense but
could not convert chances into goals. Deepika produced a superb solo field goal
surprising the Netherlands goalkeeper in the 35th minute to reduce
the lead at 1-2. Savita Punia was brilliant with their saves not allowing any
chances for the Netherlands team to increase their lead. Baljeet Kaur scored a
superb goal finding a little gap between the Netherlands goalkeeper in the 43rd
minute to level the scores at 2-2. At the end of the 3rd quarter,
the Indian team made a strong comeback.
It was an
aggressive start for the Netherlands team in the 4th quarter as they
never allowed the Indian attackers to move ahead. They kept pressure but could
not convert chances into goals as Savita remained solid with her goalkeeping.
At the end of the fourth quarter, India and Netherlands drew with a thrilling
2-2 scoreline forcing the match into a shootout.
Netherlands
captain Sanders Pien took the first shot which was well saved by Savita. Deepika
scored with an impressive technique giving India a 1-0 lead. Veen Marjin
converted for Netherlands making it 1-1.
Beauty Dung's shot was well saved by the Netherlands goalkeeper Anne. Savita Punia produced a
lovely save of Van der Est Fly. Mumtaz Khan produced a superb reverse flick
shot to give the Indian team a 2-1 lead. Fokke Lunna's shot went wide off the
goal post allowing India to remain in the lead.
India’s
last by Baljeet Kaur was well saved by Anne. Dickie Pien could not convert the
last shot as the Indian team stunned the Netherlands by 2-1 in the penalty
shootouts.
India’s
Performance in The Bhuvneshwar Leg
The Indian
women’s hockey team had a mixed-bag Bhuvneshwar leg. They began the season with
a thrilling 3-2 win over England on 15th February. The second match
against England was a 2-2 draw before the visitors won 2-1 in shootouts.
Indian team
suffered a 3-4 loss and a 0-1 loss in their next two matches against Spain on
18th and 19th February 2025.
They were completely
outplayed in their first match against Germany by 0-4 on 21st
February. Indian women’s team showed great fighting spirit to win by 1-0 in the
2nd match on 22nd February.
Indian team
suffered a thrilling 2-4 loss to the Netherlands on 24th February
before stunning the Olympic Champions in shootouts.
