FIH Pro Hockey League 2024/25: Indian Men’s Hockey Team Beat England
The Indian men’s hockey team took revenge as they defeated England in their final home match played at Kalinga Stadium, Bhuvneshwar on 25th February 2025.
It was a cautious start by both teams in the first quarter. The
Indian team showed aggression but not able to convert chances into goals.
Both played eagerly but could not convert the chances. At the end of the first
quarter, the scores remained 0-0.
Abhishek produced some brilliant stickwork going past three
defenders, but Sukhjeet Singh could not convert it into a goal. The Indian team
were down to 10 men as Jugraj Singh was a yellow card. The Indian team kept the
pressure on England's defence with consistent pressure.
India earned a penalty corner which was converted by captain
Harmanpreet Singh in the 26th minute to give the hosts a 1-0 lead. England
fought back strongly as Payton was tackled inside the circle as they were awarded a penalty stroke. Connor Williamson went past Suraj Kakera in the 30th
minute to level the scores at 1-1. At the end of the first half, India and
England remained equal at 1-1.
The third quarter began off perfectly for the Indian team as
Harmanpreet Singh converted a penalty corner in the 32nd minute to give
the hosts a 2-1 lead. England looked dangerous on the counterattacks, but
Indian defence remained solid not allowing any chances to level the scores. At
the end of the third quarter, the scores remained 2-1 in favour of India.
England began the fourth quarter on an aggressive note winning a penalty corner in the 48th minute. Suraj Kakera produced a superb
save to deny Sam Ward. It was a good effort by Hardik to increase the lead, but
James thwarted the threat.
In an attempt to level the scores, England decided to keep the
goalkeeper away with 11 players on the field. The Indian defence remained solid
as the hosts recovered from a 2-3 loss on 24th February 2025.
With this victory, the Indian men’s hockey team climbed to 3rd
place in the 2024/25 FIH Pro Hocke League.
India’s Men’s Team Performance In Bhuvneshwar
The Indian men’s hockey team had a good outing in the
Bhuvneshwar leg. It was not a ideal for Harmanpreet Singh side with a 1-3
loss to Spain on 15th February. They returned to form beating Spain
in the 2nd match by 2-0 on the 16th.
It was a disappointing outing for the Indian team as they
suffered a 1-4 loss to Germany on 18th February. They showed great
fighting spirit to beat Germany by 1-0 in the 2nd fixture on 19th
February.
The Indian team defeated Ireland twice on the 21st and 22nd
February with scorelines of 3-1 and 4-0. Harmanpreet Singh's -led side suffered a closely fought 2-3 loss to England on 24th February before a 2-1
victory on 25th February.
They will look to prove their worth as they take on Netherlands,
Argentina, Australia & Belgium in the European Leg starting from June 9th.
