WPL 2025 Match 5: Mumbai Indians Register First Victory

 

After a narrow loss in the first game against Delhi Capitals, Mumbai Indians registered their first win of the tournament with an easy win over Gujarat Giants played at Kotambi Stadium, Vadodara on 18th February 2025.

Mumbai Indians captain Harmanpreet Kaur won the toss and decided to field first. It was an ideal start as Nat Sciver Brunt struck getting rid of Beth Mooney with a simple catch to Sanskriti Gupta at backward point. GG batters played rash strokes that led to their dismissals.

Shabnim Ismail got the big wicket of Laura Woolvardt caught by Sajana at deep cover. Hayley Mathews dismissed Dayalan Hemalatha with an easy catch to Kerr at deep midwicket. Brunt struck again to get rid of GG captain Ash Gardner caught by Sajana. At the end of the first six overs, GG ended with the scoreboard reading 28 for 4.

Amelia Kerr got the massive wicket of Deandra Dottin with a sharp piece of stumping by Yastika Bhatia to leave GG in deep trouble. Kashvee Gautam provided some resistance before Mathews got rid of her with a good catch by Yastika Bhatia. Harleen Doel looked in good touch with positive strokes as wickets fell from the other end.

Amanjot Kaur got the big wicket of Harleen with an easy catch to Mathews at deep square leg. Tanuja Kanwar and Sayali Sathgare added valuable runs. Priya Mishra was run out while attempting the second run. Mumbai Indians bundled Gujarat Giants out for 120. Hayley Mathews was the pick of the bowlers with 3 for 16, Amelia Kerr and Brunt took 2 wickets each & Shabnim Ismail grabbed 1 wicket.

Nat Sciver Brunt continued her great form

Chasing down 121 runs to win, Yastika Bhatia and Hayley Mathews provided a steady start putting some pressure on GG bowlers. Tanuja Kanwar got the breakthrough dismissing Mathews with a simple catch to Harleen at square leg.

Nat Sciver Brunt played with an attacking approach keeping the scoreboard ticking. At the end of the first six overs, MI scored 37 for 1. After a close LBW call, Yastika Bhatia could not cash in as Laura Woolvardt took a good high catch at long-on. Kashvee Gautam struck dismissing MI captain Harmanpreet Kaur in front of the stumps.

Nat Sciver made the batting look easy keeping the scoreboard ticking. Amelia Kerr also showed her aggressive abilities. Kashvee Gautam got the scalp of Kerr, but it was not enough for GG. Kerr and Brunt added 45 runs for the 4th wicket. Sciver Brunt looked composed, reaching fifty off just 33 deliveries.

Priya Mishra got the wicket of Brunt taking an inside edge onto the stumps. Sajana hit the winning runs with a boundary as MI won the match by 5 wickets with 23 balls to spare.

MI 122 for 5 in 16.1 overs (Mathews 57, Kashvee Gautam 2/15) beat GG 120 in 20 overs (Harleen Doel 32, Hayley Mathews 3/16) by 5 wickets.

For her all-around contributions with 17 and 3 for 16 in 4 overs, Hayley Mathews was named the player of the match award. Mumbai Indians opened the account in this year’s WPL.
