WPL 2025 Match 8: Top 3 Performers For UPW In Their First Win Of The Tournament

Under the captaincy of Deepti Sharma, UP Warriorz registered their first win of WPL 2025 with a commanding win over Delhi Capitals in match number 8 played at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru on 22nd February.

After being asked to bat first by Meg Lanning, UPW batters struggled with the pitch offering lots for the pace bowlers. West Indies Chinelle Henry showed her class smashing DC bowlers all over the park to help them post 177 for 9.

UP Warriorz bowlers looked impressive despite dropping so many catches leading them to an easy 33-run victory including a hattrick by Grace Harris in the final over.

Here we look at the 3 Top performers for UP Warriorz in their first win of WPL 2025 against Delhi Capitals.

1.      Chinelle Henry

Chinelle Henry came to the crease with UP Warriorz struggling at 91 for 6. She showed intent right from the word go putting Delhi Capitals bowlers under immense pressure.

Like the previous match, Henry displayed brutal hitting by smashing Delhi Capitals bowlers all over the park. She kept the momentum going with range stroke play scoring the joint fastest fifty in WPL history of 18 deliveries. It was a sensational hitting as Henry displayed range hitting with a 62 off 22 balls including 2 fours and 8 massive sixes that allowed UPW Warriorz to post 177 for 9.

Chinelle Henry’s brilliance made sure that UP Warriorz posted 177 for 9. UP Warriorz smashed 67 runs in the last 4 overs. In the bowling front also, Henry bowled with great control picking the wicket of Marizanne Kapp. She gave away 42 runs in her 4 overs. For her all-round brilliance, Henry was named the player of the match award.

2.      Kranti Goud

Kranti Goud was superb with the ball putting enough pressure on the Delhi Capitals batters. She kept tight lines and lengths not allowing any room. Goud got the breakthrough dismissing DC captain Lanning with a stunning delivery.

After a series of drop chances, Goud got rid of Shafali Varma with a simple catch to Saima Thakor. She was brought into the attack and got big wickets of Jess Jonassen with a great high catch by herself. Goud then dismissed well-set Jemimah Rodrigues to end Delhi Capitals hopes of winning.

It was a dream spell by Goud with figures of 4 for 25 in 4 overs. UP Warriorz lacked pace bowling options in the first two matches against Gujarat Giants and Delhi Capitals.

3.      Grace Harris

Grace Harris delivered the goods for UP Warriorz with the ball. She grabbed her first wicket dismissing her team-mate Annabel Sutherland as Deepti Sharma took a good low catch.

It was a disciplined bowling effort by Grace Harris who kept tight lines and lengths not allowing DC batters to score runs easily. The off-spinner was handed the charge of last over. She did not disappoint with a hattrick including wickets of Niki Prasad, Arundhati Reddy &Minnu Mani. Harris became the third bowler in WPL history to take a hattrick.

Harris finished with figures of 4 for 15 in 2.3 overs. Her bowling efforts along with Kranti Goud ensured that the UP Warriorz registered a 33-run victory over Delhi Capitals.

  The defending Champions India registered a commanding win in the 2 nd semi-finals against South Korea of the Asian Champions Trophy 2024 played in Hulunbir, Inner Mongolia on 16 th September.   The defending Champions England qualified for the semi-finals with a thrashing of the USA in a must-win game played at Kensington Oval, Barbados on 23 rd June 2024.
