Sultan of Johor Cup 2025: Indian Team Starts the Tournament With A Thrilling Win
The Indian
team began the Sultan of Johor Cup 2025 with a thrilling win over Great Britain
played at Johor Bahru, Malaysia on 11th October.
Indian team
faced the defending champions Great Britain in the opening match of the
tournament. Great Britain made an impression right away with 2 back-to-back penalty
corners. The first one was saved by the Indian goalkeeper before the second
shot went wide off the goalpost.
Both teams
had possession before Indian team earned their first PC due to stick check. It
did not yield in any results as the scores remained 0-0 at the end of first
quarter.
The second
quarter began off brilliantly with India earning a penalty corner thanks to Arajiit
Singh counter-attack. India could not convert the PC with superb saves by
England goalkeeper with rebound shots. Ravneet Singh tapped the goal with a
superb run by Gurnjot Singh in the 23rd minute to give India 1-0
lead. Soon after, Micheal Roydon scored a lovely goal with a brilliant run by
Max Anderson in the 26th minute to level the scores at 1-1. Both
teams had equal possession with 10 by India while Great Britain had 9.
It was a
cautious start by both teams with possession but the defenders looked solid not
allowing any chances. A superb saved by Prince Deep Singh denied England goal
from a penalty corner. Rohit scored a brilliant goal from a penalty corner in
the dying minutes to give India 2-1 lead.
The fourth
quarter began well for Great Britain receiving a penalty stroke. Kaden Dryasey
converted the penalty stroke into a goal in the 46th minute as Great
Britain levelled the scores at 2-2. India earned 3 penalty corners during 50th,
51st and 52nd minute but could convert the first two
chances.
Captain
Rohit led from the front with a superb goal from the 3rd penalty
corner in the 52nd minute to give India 3-2 lead. It was an amazing
game of hockey as both sides had chances but Indian team held onto their nerves.
This is an
ideal preparation for all the teams to gain exposure for upcoming Junior World
Cup to be played in Chennai and Madurai taking place this year.
They will
now face New Zealand in their 2nd game on 12th October. Pakistan
thrashed Malaysia 7-2 while Australia is currently playing New Zealand.
