Sultan Azlan Shah 2025: India Beat New Zealand In A Thriller

The Indian men’s hockey team edged past New Zealand in a thrilling contest of their 4th match of the Sultan Azlan Shah tournament played at Ipoh, Malaysia on 27th November 2025.

In the first 2 minutes of first quarter, New Zealand created multiple chances but not able to convert into goals. Amit Rohidas converted a lovely penalty corner into a goal in the 4th minute to give India 1-0 lead. After that goal, the Indian team put consistent pressure but New Zealand defense remained solid enough. At the end of first quarter, scores remained 1-0 in favor of India.

New Zealand showed domination with possession in the second quarter with consistent attacks but Indian defense remained solid enough. There were two decent chances for Kiwis as they let them slip. At the end of the first half, scores remained 1-0 in favor of India.

It was a perfect start for India in the third quarter with captain Sanjay scoring from a penalty corner in 32nd minute to double lead at 2-0. New Zealand kept piling the pressure on Indian team with chances after chances but not able to convert it into a goal. George Baker got back New Zealand into the game with lovely field goal in 43rd minute to make it 1-2. At the end of the third quarter, India led 2-1.

New Zealand made a perfect start to the final quarter with lovely penalty corner by George Baker in 48th minute via variations to level scores at 2-2. The patience rewarded for consistent pressure as Dilpreet Singh made a pass to Karthik Selvam with easy goal in 54th minute to give India a 3-2 lead.

With minutes left in the game, Indian captain Sanjay missed golden chance to double lead as he missed penalty stroke. New Zealand made aggressive move without their goalkeeper and then 11 attacking players, but Indian defense remained solid as India won the match by 3-2.

After this exciting win over New Zealand, Indian team moved to the top of points table with 9 and is likely to feature in finals of tournament. India will face Canada in their final game of league stage on 29th November.

  The Board of Cricket Control of India have announced their squad for the 3 ODI and 3 T20Is matches against Sri Lanka starting from 13 th July 2021. With the Indian senior team featuring in World Test Championship finals and England tour, Shikhar Dhawan has been appointed as the captain while Bhuvneshwar Kumar named as the vice-captain for the tour.   The Australian Cricket Team registered a consolation win in the 3 rd and final T20I match played at the Ageas Bowl, Southampton on Tuesday. By virtue of this victory, Australia retained their number 1 ranked T20I side in the world.   Australian captain Aaron Finch won the toss and decided to field first.
