Malaysia Open 2026 Day 1: Lakshya Sen & Ayush Shetty Enter Second Round

 

The first day of the Super 1000 Malaysia Open began with Lakshya Sen and Ayush Shetty winning their respective first round matches played at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 6th January 2025.

Lakshya Sen defeated Jason Teh of Singapore in three thrilling games. The first game saw Sen starting lead putting pressure on Jason before Jason fought back strongly to level the scores at 10-10. At the mid-game break, Sen had a slender 11-10 lead. After the interval it was one-way traffic as the Indian won first game comfortably by 21-16.

The second game saw both players fighting for each point before Lakshya Sen committed few unforced errors. At the mid-game interval, Jason took a commanding 11-5 lead. After the break, it was one-way traffic for Singapore player to win the second set easily at 21-15.

Jason Teh began the deciding game on a positive note putting Sen under pressure with a slender lead. Sen made strong comeback keeping the momentum not allowing any chances for his opponent. At the mid-game break, Indian had a 11-8 lead. After the break, Sen kept consistent pressure on Jason to win the third game comfortably by 21-14 to move into the second round. He will face Lee Chik Yu of Hong Kong.

Ayush Shetty stunned current Olympic bronze medallists Lee Zii Jia of Malaysia in two straight games. Shetty started the first game with great control putting pressure on the Malaysian. He kept pressure on Malaysian right from word go and won first game easily by 21-12.

Shetty continued his superb form in the second game keeping pressure on Lee Zii Jia and won it easily by 21-17 winning in just 39 minutes. He will face Shi Y Q of China.

It was curtains for Malvika Bansod as she lost to Ratchnok Intanon in two straight games. Bansod who was returning to court after an injury struggled losing with scoreline of 11-21, 11-21.

The men’s doubles pairing of Amsakarunan/MR Arjun lost to Midorikawa & Yamashita of Japan in two straight games. The first game saw Indian pairing struggle losing with scoreline of 11-21.

It was a closely fought affair in the second game before Indian pairing suffer loss by 20-22.

PV Sindhu, Satwik/Chirag Shetty, Tressa Jolly/Gayatri Gopichand will play their first-round matches from tomorrow.

1.      Lakshya Sen defeated Jason Teh (Men’s Singles)- 21-16, 15-21, 21-14

2.      Ayush Shetty defeated Lee Zii Jia (Men’s Singles)- 21-12, 21-17

3.      Malvika Bansod lost to Ratchnok Intanon (Women’s Singles)- 11-21, 11-21

4.      Amsakarunan/MR Arjun lost to Midorikawa/Yamashita (Men’s Doubles)- 11-21, 20-22.
