All England Badminton Championship 2026 Day 1: Lakshya, Dhruv & Tanisha Enter Second Round

 

The Indian shuttlers made a decent start to the prestigious Super 1000 All England badminton championship 2026 with Lakshya Sen, Dhruv Kapila/Tanisha Crasto entering into the second round played at Birmingham on 3rd March.

Lakshya Sen stunned defending champion Shi Y Q of China in three thrilling games. It was a closely fought affair in the initial stages before Sen showed great skills putting Shi under immense pressure to take a 11-7 lead at the interval. After the break, Sen put on brilliant display of badminton with 18-12 lead. Shi Y Q fought back strongly with points in succession. Both players fought for each point before Sen held onto his nerves to win the 1st game with 23-21 scoreline.

Shi Y Q started the second game on an aggressive note putting Sen under pressure with smashes and drop shots with 5-3 lead. The Indian fought back strongly to level the scoring at 6-6. Shi Y Q took 5 points in succession to take a 11-8 lead at the break. After the interval, the World number 1 Shi put on superb display of badminton with a commanding 19-13 lead before Sen fought back, but the Chinese held onto his nerves to take the second game at 21-19.

The third and deciding game was a closely fought affair right from the word go. Both players fought for each point till 6-6. Sen showed his class to take a slender 11-9 lead. After the break, the star Indian shuttler played thrilling badminton with smashes and drop shots putting Shi under pressure. Despite some efforts, Sen won the third game by 21-18 scoreline to move into the second round. He will face Na Ka Long Anus of Hong Kong.

The mixed doubles pairing of Dhurv Kapila/Tanisha Crasto defeated Hoo PR and Cheng S Y of Malaysia in two straight games. Dhruv and Tanisha made a lovely start to the first game putting Malaysian pair under pressure to take a 11-7 lead at the break. After interval, Hoo and SY made a stunning comeback before Dhruv and Tanisha registered 21-17 scoreline in first game.

The second game was a closely fought affair, but this time around Hoo and SY put on a superb badminton with slender 11-9 lead at the break. After the break, Dhruv and Tanisha fought back strongly to win 2nd game with closely fought scoreline 21-19 to move into second round. They will face Tang CM and Tse YS of Hong Kong, China.

 It was curtains for Malvika Bansod as she lost to Chen Yu Fei of China in two straight games. Bansod began the first game on a positive note with a decent lead during the initial stages before Chen looked in complete control winning with a scoreline of 21-11, 21-6.

Tressa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand went down fighting in three games against Hirota & Sakuramoto of Japan. The first game saw the Japanese pairing put on an excellent display putting enough pressure on Indian pairing to win the first game comfortably at 21-15.

The second game Tressa and Gayatri began well before Hirota and Sakuramoto fought back strongly to take a slender 11-10 lead at the break. After the interval, Indian pair showed great skills taking points in succession winning 2nd game easily with 21-15 scoreline.

Tressa and Gayatri began the 3rd game on a positive note putting pressure on Japanese pairing taking decent lead initially. Hirota and Sakuramoto fought back strongly to take a slender 11-10 at the break. After the interval, both players took alternate points before Japanese pairing won with 21-18 scoreline.

Unnati Hooda suffered a straight game loss to Pornpawee Chocuwong of Thailand. The young Indian shuttler started on a positive note before the experienced Chocuwong looked in complete control winning first game by 21-12.

The second game was a much better contest by Unnati. After the initial contest, Chocuwong dominated and looked to take the game away. Unnati fought back with some quick points in dying moments of second game before Chocuwong won it easily by 21-18.

1.      Lakshya Sen defeated Shi Y Q (Men’s Singles)- 23-21, 19-21, 21-18

2.      Dhruv Kapila/Tanisha Crasto defeated Hoo PR/Cheng SY-21-17, 21-19

3.      Malvika Bansod lost to Chen Yu Fei (Women’s Singles)- 11-21, 6-21

4.      Tressa Jolly/Gayatri Gopichand lost to Hirota/Sakuramoto (Women’s Doubles)- 15-21, 21-15, 18-21

5.      Unnati Hooda lost to Pornpawee Chocuwong (Women’s Singles)- 12-21, 18-21.
