Swiss Open 2026 Day 2: Good Day For Indian Shuttlers

 

It was a good day for the Indian shuttlers as 3 of them entered into the 2nd round of the Super 300 Swiss Open 2026 played at Basel, Switzerland on 11th March.

Kiran George stunned former World champion Loh Kiean Yew of Singapore in two straight games. The first game was a closely fought affair as both players fought for each point. Loh had a slender 11-10 at the break. After the break, Loh had chance to take the first game before Kiran showed skills to win first game by 23-21.

The second game also saw a closely fought affair with both players fighting for each point. It ebbed and flowed as George took the second game also with 21-19 scoreline to move into the 2nd round. He will face Jason Gunwan of Hong Kong.

Tharun Mannepalli stunned Kenta Nishimoto of Japan. The first game saw Nishimoto putting on excellent badminton display putting Tharun under immense pressure. It was a good performance by the experienced Nishimoto to take the first game away at 21-16.

Nishimoto had a brilliant start to the second game with attacking shots putting Mannepalli under pressure. After the break, Mannepalli fought strongly by taking points in succession to storm back taking 2nd game by 21-16. Tharun showed class in the 3rd and deciding game with strong start before winning the game by 7-2 with Nishimoto retiring hurt. He will face Justin Hoh of Malaysia.

Ayush Shetty went down to Brian Yang of Canada in two straight games. Shetty began the first game on a strong with initial 8-3 lead before Yang fought back strongly. Yang showed fighting spirit winning first game by 21-18. The second game was another closely fought affair with both players fighting for each point. Yang showed skills to win it easily by 21-19 and move into second round.

Kidambi Srikanth lost to Jason Gunwan of Hong Kong in three games. The first game saw Srikanth producing a dominating display with 21-15 scoreline. Srikanth could not maintain intensity and committed lots of unforced errors losing by 15-21, 4-21 to be knocked in first round.

In the women’s singles section, Tanvi Sharma suffered straight game loss to number 1 seeded Wardani of Indonesia. Sharma struggled losing by 11-21, 10-21.

Unnati Hooda also lost in the first round to Chiu PC of Chinese Taipei in straight games. Hooda looked out of sorts against 6th seeded losing by 14-21, 14-21.

Malvika Bansod also suffered straight game loss to Pornpawee Chochouwong of Thailand. It was one-way traffic as Bansod struggled losing by 11-21, 15-21.

The mixed doubles section saw a major upset as Dhruv Kapila/Tanisha Crasto defeated 4th seeded J Toft and A Magelund of Denmark. Kapila/Crasto put on superb badminton winning with 21-15, 21-14 scoreline. They will face Gao JX & Wu MY of China.

9.      HS Prannoy (Walkover) against Watanabe.

10. Rohan Kapoor/Shivani Gadde lost to Oupthong/Sudajprapat (Mixed Doubles)- 19-21, 14-21.
