Badminton Asia Championship 2026: Stunning Performance by Ayush Shetty

 

Ayush Shetty became the first Indian after a gap of 61 years to win a sliver medal at the prestigious Badminton Asia Championship 2026 played at Ningbo, China on 12th April.

Shetty lost to 2nd seeded and local favorite Shi Y Q in two straight games. Both players began on even keel before Shi Y Q looked in sublime touch not allowing any chances for the 20 year Indian. At mid-game interval, Shi took a 11-6 lead. After the break, it was one-way traffic as Shi completely dominated winning first game by 21-8.

The second game saw Ayush Shetty putting pressure on Shi with smashes and drop shots with 7-3 lead. Shi then showed his class making life tough for the Indian with lovely shots. At the mid-game interval, Shi led 11-8. After the break, the Chinese maintained the momentum winning by 21-10 and winning title.

Before this tournament, Ayush Shetty struggled with his form and fitness. He stunned the 7th seeded Li Shifeng of China in the first round with a 21-13, 21-16 scoreline. It was a dominating performance by the 20-year-old Indian.

Ayush then got rid of Chi Yu Jen of Chinese Taipei in the round of 16. It was another impressive performance with 21-16, 21-12 scoreline.

He then stepped up his game in the quarterfinals defeating the World number 4 and seeded 3rd Jonathan Christie by 23-21, 21-17. Ayush stormed back into the match trailing 18-20 in first game before holding onto his nerves to win first game.

Ayush Shetty then produced the biggest upset of the tournament defeating the World number 1 Kulvanut Vitisdarn of Thailand in three games. The first game saw Ayush struggling losing by 10-21.

It was a stunning comeback by Ayush Shetty in the 2nd game keeping his nerves under pressure to win by 21-19. The third game saw Ayush dominate to win by 21-17 and enter the finals of this tournament after a gap of 61 years.
