Singapore Open 2026 Day 1: Disappointing Outing For Indian Shuttlers

 

The Indian shuttlers had a disappointing outing with only 2 of them making into round of 16 in the prestigious Super 750 Singapore Open played on 26th May 2026.

PV Sindhu stunned 5th seeded Putri Kusuma Wardani in two straight games. Sindhu began with full force putting Wardani under pressure. After that, Wardani showed great skills not allowing any chances for the two-time Olympic medalists taking a commanding 11-7 lead. After the break, Wardani looked to take the game away before Sindhu fought back strongly to level scores and then win first set with 21-17 scoreline.

The second game began with both players fighting for each point taking alternate points. Sindhu showed great fighting spirit and courage taking a 11-9 lead at the break. After the break, Wardani made a match out of it taking points in succession, before Sindhu held onto her nerves winning with 21-18 scoreline. She will face R Gunji of Japan.

Satwik/Chirag Shetty survived a scare before winning against Chen Z Y and P Smith of USA in three games. The first game saw closely fought as both pairs fought for each point before Indian pairing had a 11-8 lead at the break. After the interval, Satwik/Chirag committed unforced errors as Chen and P Smith dominated to take 20-16 lead. The Indian pairing saved four match points to level score at 20-20. Both pairs could not convert before Chen and Smith won with 28-26 scoreline.

The second game saw both pairs fighting for each point as it was a closely fought affair before Satwik/Chirag took a slender 11-10 lead. Despite a solid challenge by Chen and Smith, Indian pairing won the 2nd game by 21-15.

Satwik/Chirag looked in good touch putting Chen and Smith under immense pressure. It was a dominating performance by Indian pairing with a commanding 11-7 lead and maintained the lead to win with 21-13 scoreline. They will face the winner of Lee J-h/Yang P-h or Huang D/Liu Y of China.

The men’s doubles pairing of Amsakarunan and MR Arjun lost to 7th seeded Hoki and Kobayashi in straight games. Indian pairing struggled against strong Japanese pairing losing by 15-21, 13-21.

It was curtains for Ayush Shetty as suffered three game loss to Victor Lai of Canada. Shetty dominated the first game putting enough pressure on Lai winning with 21-11 scoreline. Lai showed great courage and spirit winning next two games comfortably by 21-14, 21-12.

Unnati Hooda was no match as she suffered straight game loss to Tomoka Miyazaki of Japan. Hooda struggled right from word go losing by 14-21, 10-21.

The women’s doubles pairing of Ashwini Bhatt and Shikha Gautam lost to Chang C-h and Yang C-t of Chinese Taipei in two straight games. Despite some fight by Indian pairing, Bhatt and Gautam lost with 16-21, 11-21 scoreline.

K Selvam and S Singhi lost to Lopez and Rodriguez in three games. The first game was a closely fought affair as both pairs fought for each point before Selvam and Singhi won by 21-18. Rodriguez and Lopez dominated in the next two games winning with 21-13, 21-5 scoreline.

Rohan Kapoor/Shivani Gadde lost to Yang P-h and Hu L-f of Chinese Taipei in two straight games. It was a good fight by the Indian pairing as put enough pressure during the first game with 11-9 lead. After the break, both pairs fought for each point before Yang and Hu won first game by 21-18.

Yang and Hu began the second game on aggressive note putting Indian pairing under pressure with 11-6 lead. After the break, Rohan and Shivani fought back strongly to take five points in succession to level scores at 11-11. Indian pairing could not convert game point before Yang and Hu won four points in succession to win by 22-20.

8.      Rohan Kapoor/Shivani Gadde lost to Yang/Hu L-f (Mixed Doubles)- 18-21, 20-22.
