Ranji- A stepping stone to selection in Indian team

Ranji Trophy,  the most prestigious domestic tournament in India  is a benchmark for the young players to showcase their talent to knock the door for national selection in the longer version of cricket in India. Similarly the IPL has provided ample opportunities for the young players to knock the door of shorter form of  the game(ODI & T-20)
This year there have been many players who have impressed with the ball and bat in the Ranji Trophy matches .There have been players who have performed well in the league stage, that include Rishi Dhawan of Himachal Pradesh both with bat and the ball. Sanju Samson of Kerala scored more than 500 runs proving his mettle in the batting, Saruabh Tiwary playing for Jharkhand, Hanuma Vihari a young batsman from Hyderbad, Pankaj Singh a tall fast bowler from Rajasthan, Sachin Rana from Harayana are other players noteworthy.

Looking at the quarter final level one can note that Karntaka's opener Robin Utahappa who scored a century in the first innings against Uttar Pradesh and laid a strong foundation for a competitive total . KL Rahul who has been impressive, apart from Uthappa. Maharastra who beat Mumbai by 8 wickets after 1996 were helped by  KD Jadhav and Khadiwale. In the quarter finals KD Jadhav and Vijay Zol proved that they can be the future stars of India. For Mumbai Thakur a young fast bowler was impressive in the first innings. In Jammu & Kashmir and Punjab match Parveez Rasool did very well and I think can be the leading spinner cum batsman for the Indian team in near future. The match between Bengal and Railways saw Dinda perform very well and he can be an option for Indian pace bowling because of his swing and pace.

In the semi finals Punjab will take on Karntaka and Maharstra take on Bengal. The Punjab will depend upon Sandeep Sharma who can swing the ball both ways. Karnataka has a good batting line-up apart from pace bowlers Vinay Kumar and Abhimanyu Mithun. In the other semi final it will be an interesting battle, but I would bet on Maharastra because of the batting depth.

The prime example of Good players getting national duty is evident by the fact that the likes of Varun Aaron, Ishwar Pandey (also for test series) and Stuart Binny have been selected in the ODI team for the upcoming NewZealnd tour. This proves beyond doubt that if one performs well at domestic level he can get a chance to play in Indian team.

The Ranji trophy is a chance for test discards to comeback in the Indian national team but unfortunately this ranji season has not seen this happening to the likes of Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh, Sehwag.
