Sri Lanka- The team to beat in 2014
Sri Lanka has been a team with some quality players in the past with likes of Arvinda De Silva, Sanath Jayasuryia, Arjuna Rantunga, Mutthamuralithran, Chaminda Vaas which can destroy any opponent. Muralithran is one of finest bowler in the world which the Sri Lankan cricket can be proud of and from then onwards the likes of Jayawarnde and Sangakara has taken Sri Lankan cricket to new level. Sri Lanka team has been in the final 2007 world cup, 2011 world cup,2012 T-20 world cup, 2009 T-20 world cup but in 2014 the dream of winning the world cup came true when the Sri Lankan team beat India. Jayasuriya was a batsman who smashed the bowlers all parts of ground if given width outside the off stump.
In the past 5 months the Sri Lankan team has won across in all three formats especially ODI and test series in Bangladesh, Asia Cup, T-20 world cup and T-20, ODI and test series in England. It has been brilliant year for them so far winning 9 matches and drawing 1 match which shows their consistency in the year 2014. They have in superb form with the bat, bowl and in the field. Whenever the team was in trouble some or other player contributed to the success and took the team out of difficulty which shows the will of the team.
The main architect which has led to Sri Lanka wins has been Kumar Sangakara especially in test matches has been exemplary with bat scoring a lot of runs in the past 5 months,scoring above fifty 7 times , a ton at lords, making the opponents pay for their mistakes. Mathews has been great as a captain in England scoring back to back tons at Lords and Leeds.All the players contributed to teams winning streak that started in Bangladesh and finished in England.
In ODI's and T-20 Malinga has been was at best bowling yorkers which did not allow the batsman to score runs freely. Senayake has been good with off spinner which troubled the batsman. In T-20 world cup final India were comfortably placed to make a huge score but the bowling of Malinga and Kulaserka did not allow them to take off and were restricted to 130 which was chased easily by Sri Lankans.
England was the place where sub contient teams struggle but Sri Lanka fought back after conceding a lead of 108 in the first innings in the 2nd test match. After that Mathews played a crucial knock of 160 which gave England a stiff target of 350, the bowlers stuck to their line and lengths and eventually they won the test match by 100 runs to script a historic test series.
In 2014 Sri Lankan team has been in superb form. They did not allow the opponents to run away with the match especially the pillars of Sri Lankan cricket Kumar Sangakra and Mahela Jayawardene who retired from the shortest form of cricket T-20 after winning the world cup. It was special feeling for these two who contributed to the success of Sri Lankan cricket. In the first test match of the England series recently Sangakara scored a ton and the name was put on the honours board.
