England vs India 3rd test 1st day: Five key moments
After winning the toss, England choose to bat at Mohali. The
Indian bowlers did a great job in the first session by picking 4 four wickets
in the first session. Bairstow, Ben Stokes and Buttler were brilliant with bat.
At the end of day 1, England scored 268 for 8. Here we look at the five key
moments of day 1.
1.
Four wickets in the first session put pressure
on England batsmen
England won the toss at Mohali and elected to bat. The
Indian fast bowlers Umesh Yadav and Mohammad Shami bowled brilliantly with new
ball beating the bat. Captain Cook was dropped by Ravindra Jadeja. Umesh Yadav
picked the first wicket of Haseeb Hameed after a solid 32 runs stand for the first
wicket. Jayant Yadav and Ravichandran Ashwin picked 2 wickets in quick
succession. Moeen Ali and Bairstow played well putting on 36 runs for the 4th
wicket. Before the lunch break, Mohammad Shami picked the wicket of Moeen Ali.
England scored 92 for 4.
2.
England batsmen came back after lunch
After the lunch break, Bairstow and Ben Stokes played
attacking cricket not allowing the Indian bowlers to settle. Both batsmen put
on 50 runs for the 5th wicket in 85 balls. Jonny Bairstow completed
his half century. As things were looking good for England, Ravindra Jadeja
picked the wicket of Ben Stokes. Jos Buttler who came in place of Ben Duckett
showed aggressive intent. Buttler and Bairstow rescued the England innings with
another 50 runs partnership for the sixth wicket. At the tea break, England
scored 205 for 5 with 113 runs in the second session for the loss of only 1
wicket.

India coming back well in final session
In the final session, Indian bowlers again showed discipline
by bowling consistent line and length. Buttler was dismissed for 43. Bairstow
who was looking good to score a century was dismissed by beautiful ball by
Jayant Yadav. Before stumps, Umesh Yadav castled Chris Woakes. At the end of
day 1, England was 268 for 8. In the final session, England scored 63 runs in
28 overs losing 3 wickets.

Bairstow fighting 89
Bairstow came to the crease when England was struggling at
51 for 3. He showed great skills against the spinners and survived a stumping
chance by Parthiv Patel. Bairstow and Ben Stokes scored runs at quick pace
after lunch. He completed his half century in 89 balls. Bairstow played with excellent
technique and was finally dismissed by Jayant Yadav for 89.

All Indian bowlers created pressure
After losing the toss, the Indian fast bowlers did an excellent
job despite 2 catches being dropped. Mohammad Shami and Umesh Yadav picked 1
wicket in the first session while Jayant Yadav and Ashwin took 1 each. When the
partnership between Stokes and Bairstow was going, Jadeja broke through and
took the important wicket of Stokes. Umesh Yadav, Jayant Yadav and Ravindra
Jadeja picked 2 wickets each while Mohammad Shami and Ravichandran Ashwin
shared 1 wicket each. It was an excellent performance by the Indian bowlers to
restrict England 268 for 8.
