Apart from Cricket, India had a great year in some other sports.  Hockey, Badminton, Kabbadi, and Basketball were the disciplines that India did remarkably well which made the fans happy. With just few hours to go for New Year we look at the top 5 sports in which India has done well in 2016. 1.      1.    Hockey 2016 was a remarkable year for Indian hockey. The Indian senior team won the silver medal in the Sultan Azlan Shah tournament, won an historic silver medal at the Champions trophy held in June, reached the quarter finals of Rio Olympics. In October, India won the gold medal at the Asian Champions Trophy held in October. As far as Junior team is concerned, the Indian team won the Euro Asia Cup, finished 4 th in the Australian Hockey League and also finished first in four national invitational hockey team. Steve Smith ends the year on a high in latest ICC test batsmen rankings

After an brilliant 165* in the second test match played at Melbourne Cricket Ground, Australian test captain Steve Smith ended the year as the top batsmen in latest ICC test batsmen rankings announced today. Virat Kohli who had a brilliant test series against England remained at second place. He scored more than 650 runs which helped India to whitewash England 4-0 and remain the number 1 ranked team in test matches. The third place is occupied by Joe Root who did have a decent series against India. The fourth place is occupied by New Zealand test captain Kane Williamson. He will have chance to climb up the rankings in the test matches against Bangladesh. David Warner performed exceptionally well in the first innings of second test match at MCG scoring 144. Because of this performance he has climbed to 5 th in the batsmen rankings. 2016 has been a wonderful year for batsmen across all formats in 2016. In the top 10 list of batsmen with most runs in all formats this year, Virat Kohli ended the year with highest top run getter. From England Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow comes are in the top 10 list. There are two players from New Zealand, 2 from South Africa , 2 from Australia and 1 from Pakistan. Here we look at the top 10 players with most runs across all formats in 2016. 1.         Virat Kohli Virat Kohli ended the year with most runs in 2016 across all formats. He played a total of 37 matches scoring 2595 runs with an average of 86.50. His highest score during the calendar year was 235 during the fourth test against England in Mumbai. India likely to play four test matches in South Africa

The number 1 ranked test team, India are likely to play four test matches in South Africa. South Africa visited India for a full tour and team India gave South Africa 3-0 beating. The real test for team India will come when they visit the rainbow nation in late 2017. It will be a mouth-watering series between these two super power houses of test cricket. The dates for the series have not been announced by South Africa. "Our scheduling discussions with the BCCI are in progress and we hope to be in a position to announce the fixtures for this tour in the new year," Haroon Lorgat, CSA CEO said. India visited South Africa in the year 2013-14. They had to slash down the number of matches because of scheduling of the matches. Why India can do well away from home?

Since Virat Kohli has taken the test captaincy from MS Dhoni in 2014, the current Indian team have won 5 successive series. The Indian team lost to Sri Lanka at Galle in 2015 and since then they are on rolling winning test series against Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka, against South Africa at home, against West Indies in West Indies and two home series against New Zealand and England. Virat Kohli has been unbeaten for 18 test matches. The main challenge for the current Indian team is to do well away from home.  They will travel to South Africa in 2017, followed by England and then Australia. Before Virat Kohli took over, India had lost to England in England twice, Australia in Australia twice and lost to South Africa and New Zealand in their own country once each in the past 5 years.
