Top 5 sports in which India has done well for 2016
Apart from Cricket, India had a great year in some other
sports. Hockey, Badminton, Kabbadi, and
Basketball were the disciplines that India did remarkably well which made the
fans happy. With just few hours to go for New Year we look at the top 5 sports
in which India has done well in 2016.
1. 1. Hockey
2016 was a remarkable year for Indian hockey. The Indian
senior team won the silver medal in the Sultan Azlan Shah tournament, won an historic
silver medal at the Champions trophy held in June, reached the quarter finals
of Rio Olympics. In October, India won the gold medal at the Asian Champions
Trophy held in October. As far as Junior team is concerned, the Indian team won
the Euro Asia Cup, finished 4th in the Australian Hockey League and
also finished first in four national invitational hockey team. In December,
India won the junior hockey world cup after 15 years.
As far women’s hockey are concerned, Indian womens team won
the 4th Asian Champions Trophy tournament beating China in the
finals. It was a great year for Indian hockey and hope to have a wonderful year
in 2017.
2. Badminton
In Badminton too, Indian shuttler’s performed extremely well.
Saina Nehwal won the Australian open Super Series in June. PV Sindhu was brilliant
becoming the first Indian women to win a silver medal in an Olympics. She
reached lost to Marin in the finals. After that she won the gold medal at the
China Open Super Series and runners up in the Hong Kong Super Series. She qualified
for Dubai Super Series reaching the semi-finals. Because of these performances,
PV Sindhu reached carrier best 6th rank. Sameer Verma lost in the
finals of the Hong Kong Super Series.
In Grand Prix Gold event, PV Sindhu won the Malaysian
Masters Grand Prix Gold event, K Srikanth won the Indian Open Grand Prix Gold
event, HS Prannoy won the Swiss Grand Prix Gold event, Sai Praneeth won the Canada
Open, Manu Attri and Sumeeth Reddy won in men’s doubles section, Pranav Chopra
and Sikki Reddy won the Brazil Grand Prix Gold event and Russian Open, runners
up at Scottish Open , Shivani Gadde won the gold medal at the Russian Open and
Sourabh Verma won the gold medal at the Taipei Open and also runners in
Bittburger Open. Siril Verma won the silver medal at the Russian Open. Ajay
Jayaram also runners up in the Dutch Open,
Siril Verma ended the year as number 1 player in junior
badminton.
3. Kabbadi
Ahmedabad hosted the Kabbadi World Cup. 16 teams participated
in the competition. Despite India losing
the first match against South Korea, the Indian showed great courage and spirit
not losing any more match from there onwards. In the finals , India defeated
Iran despite trailing in the first half. India showed that they have the technique
to beat any team in the world.
4. Basketball
The Indian mens basketball team produced an excellent performance
in the Asian basketball championship. India played well in the group stages and
reached the quarter finals losing to Iran. India lost to China in the play off
match before winning the 7th-8th playoff match. This was
their best performance till date.
5. Gymnastics
Deepika Karmakar the first Indian female gymnast qualified for
the Rio Olympics. In the Rio Olympics she progressed into the finals. In the
finals she did her best and narrowly missed an bronze medal. He finished fourth
and became a sensation during the time of Olympics. It was one of the best
performances by Indian gymnast.
