Ranji Trophy finals Day 5: Gujarat creates history by winning their first Ranji title
Parthiv Patel brilliant 143 ensured that Gujarat created
history by beating Mumbai in exciting finals of Ranji Trophy 2016/17. Gujarat
won the finals by 5 wickets.
Starting the day on 47 for 0, Gujarat lost 2 early wickets
of Panchal and Merai only adding 4 runs. Parthiv Patel and Samit Gohel put on
38 runs for the third wicket before Samit Gohel was dismissed by Nayar. Parthiv
Patel and Manprit Juneja attacked the Mumbai bowlers. Parthiv Patel was lucky
at the start of the innings being dropped and the ball not going hitting into
stumps. The captain Parthiv Patel completed his half century in 71 balls. At
lunch Gujarat were 146 for 3.
After the lunch break, Manprit Juneja played aggressive
strokes and put pressure back on Mumbai bowlers. Parthiv Patel continued his
excellent form. Juneja completed his half century in 109 balls. Juneja was soon
dismissed by Herwadkar for 54 ending a 116 runs partnership which helped Gujarat
to reach closer to the target. Rujul Bhatt came to the crease and gave support
to Patel. Parthiv Patel completed his century and continued his brilliant form
after that. At tea Gujarat were just 27 runs away from a win.
After the tea break, Parthiv Patel was dismissed by Shardul
Thakur for 143. Chirag Gandhi hit 2 boundaries and won the Ranji Trophy
2016/17. It was a brilliant effort by Gujarat who performed well in the entire
season.
For his brilliant performance in the second innings, Parthiv
Patel was named the man of match.
Gujarat 328 (Parthiv Patel 90, Juneja 77, Nayar 3/91,
Shardul Thakur 4/84 )and 313 for 5( Parthiv Patel 143, Sandhu 2/101) beat
Mumbai 228( Prithvi Shaw 71, RH Bhatt 2/5, RP Singh 2/48)and 411( Sheryas Iyer
82, Nayar 91, SuryaKumar Yadav 45, C Gaja 6/121) by 5 wickets.
